why is my media basket being overflowed and spilling off to the side but water level in my pump chambers are getting lower and lower? how do i balance this out where i have slightly less water in my display tank but keeping the water level high enough in the back chambers?

I can't recall are you running stock pumps and media basket? What kind of media do you have in it.

The in-tank basket will have more flow. Mine did this with the mj1200 both on. Those pumps cannot be used as a wave maker. Make sure you're floss is clean and not too clogged. I replace mine every couple days. If you have purigen in the second chamber don't lay it flat, lay it on its side. Chemi pure should be zip tied and hanging in the third.

Finally if you turn it on and the water drops a little in the back you should be able to add a little more water back there

The only way to lower the level of water in the display tank is to lower the flow. You can do that by either alternating your pumps if you already aren't or by downgrading to smaller return pumps. If you do that the water that is in the display tank will move to the corners and your media basket will also be less likely to overflow. However, you could get the water level up in the corners AND have it high in the display tank by simply adding salt water slowly. It will make its way to the back corners.

I agree with Wickedblue that an InTank media basket would help. However, I'm all about getting as much stuff out of the media basket as possible and keeping the flow as high as possible. You can do that by using a reactor for GFO and carbon. When you do that you can have only the filter pad on top of the basket and keep a lot of flow without it overflowing. I was glad to read ange's build thread right after picking up my nano cube and I followed his methodology. I'm glad to not have to deal with various bags clogging up the media basket.

thanks for the advice guys. right now my pumps are stock running at constant power. i do have the intank media basket. i will try messing with the placement of the media in my basket. i have read every single page of this thread as well as ange's thread and have been following it very closely. i will be looking into reactors soon.

Just noticed today that the right strip of my LED lights are not working. This really frustrates me b/c the tank is less than 3 months old. Not sure why this happened but now I am going to have to send the hood in, not to mention that I have to try to purchase temporary lighting. Has anybody else had this happened to them? I am running the 89w LED pro hood.

I spoke with JBJ yesterday and they are going to replace the strip after I send it in. At least they have good customer service.

Yep, I've got a whole row of 14k LEDs that went out on me. My hood's also only a few months old. I've also had a really bad experience with my JBJ chiller. I'm not a JBJ fan anymore.

But on the upside, the LED Advance hood lighting color temperature is so poor that it has bleached all of my corals, and so it was good that I lost a row of the bright white lights.

That's another thing about the JBJ hood, I assume there is no dimming? With the fixed hood position, seems like dimming would be essential for light acclimation. I think dimming on that rapidLED kit is another $40 extra, not sure though...

As far as flow..........I run 2 Maxijet 1200's and the In-Tank Media Basket with the Filter pad and Cheato in it only. Works pretty well. I use a TLF 150 Reactor running in reverse with Carbon and GFO and it seems to run pretty decent. Just need to mix the media every week to keep it from clumping together and slowing the flow too much.

I'm looking into options for upgrading the LED lights that are more designed for growing SPS corals. What lights are others using? It would be ideal if I can find lights that have brackets vs a hanging kit.

Acroholicreefer,

When you say brackets, do you mean retrofit kits or just some way to mount lights without hanging them?

Option 1 - Rapid LED Retrofit Kits (Uses the same lighthood you already have)

Option 2 - Kessil A350 with Gooseneck Mount. (Remove Hood and mount Gooseneck with Light)

Hello fellow JBJ 28 Gallon Owners,

I have been struggling with getting good flow through the media basket in the central chamber when inserting bags of GFO and GAC. I do change the filter pad daily.

So, figured I'd try moving the media bags to the adjacent chambers (they do fit nicely). Thinking the upward flows in those chambers will provide enough circulation through the media bags.

Has anyone tried it or have concerns with this strategy. So far, so good BTW...

Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking of getting the JBJ 28g Pro for my bedroom desk. Unfortunately, if it is not completely self-contained, low mess and able to run on my desk (strong laminated wood) it's a dealbreaker. After going through the forums i've noticed that most users have the stands and various external devices, is it possible to do without these?

Thanks in advance!

I think most people have those already occupied with something else, so they cannot. I want to try to use one for GAC, the other I have heater in the way...

So I was told that the mini skimmer 115 by aquatic life would fit in the back of my 28 g nano cube led pro. Doesn't seem to fit at all. Has anyone successfully installed one of these in the back of this tank?

Thanks

I just ordered a cf 28g with stand since it was on sale. I am downgrading from my 75g and happen to have two reactors already. Is there anyway to setup the reactors in the stand remotely instead of hanging on the back? Or would you need a rather powerful pump?

Should be possible, may need a slightly stronger pump and changing media is going to be more difficult (siphon effect from being below tank, use some quick disconnects or you will HATE changing media). The stock stand gets full quick (power strips, chiller, doser, controller, etc etc etc), so real estate in there is at a premium, just something to think about. :) Bigger stand is a fix-all solution though.

Any one using the aqumax HOB 1, has any one removed the strainer from the intake tube. I am just wondering if it would pull out the crap that gets stuck in the strainer.

i finally added fish to my tank. added 2 clown fishes. 1 more cleaner shrimp on top of my peppermint shrimp, 5 gold legged hermits to help with micro algae and 1 emerald crab.

do i have to turn off my protein skimmer and pumps when i feed? i just dropped a few pellets of food in there and i dont think my clown fishes even knew there was food... its probably stuck in my filter floss now....

I have the intermediate LED version and want to add a little color to my system w/o upgrading the whole top, any ideas on what strip or what not I can put under the plastic shield? Obviously if this tank is still running next year I will do rapid led upgrade and put in the colors I want but as is it is only white i need some blue and maybe cyan for coral growth.

I'd keep the strainer on, anything big enough to be caught in there is likely to clog your needle wheel and the strainer is much easier to clean.

No need to shut off the skimmer when you feed. Fish will take time to acclimate to your tank and food before they start eating, don't worry just yet.

I'd think that red / UV would be good supplemental colors for looks. Panorama makes the stunner strips in various colors that would be easy to incorporate into your hood for a decent price.
