On the subject of cooling the tank, has anyone tried to upgrade the cooling fans in the canopy? I haven't opened mine up yet so i'm not sure how involved it would be, but it seems worth a shot. Besides it should be cheaper then a chiller. Also, has anyone tried measureing the intensity of the light in the tank with the stock 14K bulb? I'm trying to determine if upgrading the lighting is really needed, and upgrading could rule out the fan cooling option.

Why did I get back into this hobby.

I just dropped $1500 on a new tank and gear!!! I didn't even order salt LOL.

I looked into it, but the stock fans are better than most upgrades (no kidding) check the specs :)

SlvrSurfRidr,

I got the specs for the fans out of the manual and I agree they are pretty nice, but i couldn't find a rating for the cfm. Were you able to find one?

New this this forum and reef tanks and am about to take the plunge. I just ordered a 28 Gallon Nano.

Still trying to decide on the LR but will probably go with Tampa Bay Saltwater Live Rock. I will probably need a chiller as it gets pretty hot in my house during the day and I have no A/C.

I really want to take my time with this and make the right decisions and hopefully I can get a lot of helpful information from this thread.

Anyone recommend any good books ?

Thanks !

Welcome aboard mooseh, you'll get more info from hangin on these boards than books but there are several good ones out there. Search the general topic section and you'll find several threads

electronic ballast upgrade

electronic ballast upgrade

Hi-

Anyone upgraded their magnetic ballast to electronic? Nanotuners has this retro upgrade kit:

http://www.nanotuners.com/product_info.php?cPath=68&products_id=525

I know there are numerous advantages to switching to electronic ballast (power consumption, bulb life, etc.) but wanted to see if anyone has swapped out their stock magnetic ballast. another advatage is you can operate the fans seperate from the lights with this retro.

PC Retro KIT

What bulbs do you guys recommend on this lighting mod? the Actinic blue or the 50/50 10000k Day/Actinic Blue bulbs? Would you do the same for each slot?

I have had my 28g nano set up for about 5 months now. The live rock and sand was transfered over from my 72 gallon tank.

This tank houses several SPS corals, about 40 pounds of live rock, 2 clown fish and a lemonpeel angelfish along with three RBTA's a few pom-pom xenia and a large frogspawn.

I changed the stock MH bulb to a phoenix 14k, did the dual pc mod(both actinic) and also put an mj1200 in the rear to feed my aquac remora skimmer. I added a couple 3" fans to help keep the temp down when the mh kicks on(fans controlled by dual stage ranco controller), in the feeding lid area. I run the mh for 6 hours and the pcs for 12 hours. I add ESV two part to help the sps grow. Right now the sps frags are on a frag rack, but will be soon moved to positions scattered on the live rock. The monti in the lower left side was about 1 inch when I started this tank and has since grown over 1.5 inches bigger in 5 months.

I have considered running a chiller but want to see how the next couple months go here with the fans. So far they have done a good job keeping the water temp at 80 degrees. My room temperature is at 72 degrees.

Thanks, Steve

They were in the RBTA's on the right hand side. You can see one of them facing the front of the glass in the pic. -Steve

Can you post pic's of the pc mods, how the skimmer fits in there and how you have the fans mounted with the controller in the feeding lid area.

Thanks and the tank looks great.

So I got most of it setup last night.

Stand was built with extra screws and liquid nails. Changed the bulb to the Radium, Dremeled the hood for the Koralia wires, modified the MJ1200 for the Remora.

Everything is looking good but I hate the way the Remora looks hanging on the back on the tank.

Tonight I’ll mount the cooler and tubes.
