This is a normal built in safety feature. I put mine on a cheap $5 timer and have it set so that it turns off every 15 minutes. This is a common work-around that should solve your problems. Good luck.
aqualifter does not pump water fast enough to be used with jbj ato. either you need to reset it using a timer as suggested above, or use a pump that pumps water faster.

An aqualifter works just fine for my 46g when the timer is used. I actually prefer this setup because the water level stays constant since it replenishes a little bit multiple times a day.
