Ok im very new with the ATO thing so im still trying to understand exactly how it works. Im looking for something like the JBJ ATO unit that is simple and accurate. The only thing is i dont know what else i will need if i decide i want to buy the JBJ ATO. It says all you need is a pump...does this mean it comes with sensors that tell when the water is too low and needs to be refilled???

Again im trying to understand how they work. So say i have the JBJ ATO. that i decide to put a powerhead pump on there to pump the water from my bucket into the tank. I would plug the ATO into the wall...then plug the pump into the ATO unit??? from there sensors run from the ATO unit into the back of my 24g AP. once the water evaps, and the sensor is triggered, the pump will kick on and fill the tank till the sensor turns off correct??? then the pump turns off and the tank is back to normal salinity!!!???

sorry if that is way off, but im trying to learn.

Any info will help! Thanks

Randall

You got it..

You plug the ATO into the wall. Your pump into the ATO and there are sensors that come with the ATO that go in the sump.

Simple as pie and a good quality product.

i bought one.. never used it.. just sits in the a box of reef stuff i wasted my money on, and didn't use... I'm going to go the litermeter route seems much more "set and forget" and has less things to fail

i use this JBJ Auto Topoff system and it is great. Easy to setup and you can set it up many different ways. The way i have mine setup is:

one sensor that turns the pump(mj600) on when the water is low in the tank and turns it off when it raises back to normal level.

The second sensor thats come with this unit i put in my top off container where my mj600 is. This sensor turns off the pump when the water level in this container gets low so that the pump will not run dry.

Any other questions?

im clowninarounds room mate and i have a 6 gal nanocube and have the evap problem as welll.....im not going to spend 70-110 dollars on a ATO.....plus i dont think i need one that good for a 6 gal......JMO (maybe some people think i do)

so my question is....is there any type of small or mini ATO....that could be a dumb question, but worth a try.....????

thanks
any help would be appreciated

in a 6 gallon tank i would just use some air line tubing and a 2 litter bottle for top off, Just put a knot in the air line tubbing so that it drips water into the tank at a really slow rate. Or use an air valve to control the flow.

ya for my 29 gallon system I just had a 1 gallon jug, with an airline and a valve, got the drip rate right and called it a day.

you would need the bottle higher than the tank.

Air control valve are cheap and should be at walmart or your LFS
