i'm really not trying to "stir the pot", and i know enough about business to know that advertising, marketing, paying employees/benefits, etc is NOT done for free... or as cheap in the u.s. as many other countries for that matter. but lets say this pump does come out, and does cost $30... of course, time will tell about it's quality/reliability (which will be a big factor for many) but this really doesn't look good for some of the other high end powerhead companies (sales wise, and reputation wise)...
i always wondered how/why something that is essentially pushing water could be so costly... yeah, it may have other bells and whistles, wireless syncing, etc but dropping $465 on a single powerhead always seemed insane to me. i understand that this hobby isn't always cheap, and cutting corners isn't always a good idea in general, but i can think of 500 other things that i'd rather spend $400+ on. maybe i'm nitpicking, it's not like these other companies are holding a gun to peoples heads to buy their product, but i always get a bad taste in my mouth when i see something that seems (and please correct me if 'm wrong) ridiculously marked up. obviously i don't have access to these other companies financials, and maybe their profit margin isn't as huge as it seems? and even if it is, are they wrong for trying to make the most money possible? if people are going to pay it, maybe they're just better at business than me! reputation on the other hand...
i hope i'm not jinxing anything, but what i'm getting at is that i really hope the WP25 and WP40 end up forcing some of the "high end" companies to lower consumer prices. despite a less than stellar reputation in the u.s. market, maybe these chinese companies can help level the playing field on a cornered market. even if the quality isn't all there, if these things last a year, i'd rather replace a $30 powerhead annually for the next decade than drop $400 all at once (the latter of which also requires replacements every so often.)
will be interesting to see where things go in the next year or two.
