jenjen's upgrade to 180gal

Parameters:

SG - 1.025
Ammonia - 0
Nitrate - 20
Calc - 360

I don't get any detectable phosphates, but I have cyano so I'm assuming there's some in there. I've been doing lighter feedings twice a day rather than a larger feeding once a day. The cyano seems to be slowing a little, but the nitrates are still higher than I'd like.

you should buy a new camera and don't let your husband take it to work:):):) i love my t1 but i need to buy a micro lens to take better pictures..... btw your husband into this hobby too or no?

I SOOOOO need a new camera! I've actually been shopping for one, just haven't decided on what I want yet. I want one I will be able to take macro shots with, and since I don't know the first thing about photography anyway it's making picking a 'good' camera rather difficult.

My husband loves watching the tank, but is not at all interested in the maintenance of it. He likes that I have a hobby I enjoy and doesn't resent the money I spend on it (thankfully!), and is willing to throw in a cube a day when I'm out of town... so I guess compared to some I'm fortunate. He's a general contractor, so he's handy to have around. He's done all my plumbing & electrical, and is at this very moment building a new stand/china cabinet for my second tank. :D

My blenny suddenly displayed territorialism today, which he's never done. I put a new crocea clam in the tank on the weekend, and I really want this one to be on the rockwork so I had set it in the rocks. It fell onto the sand so I replaced it... we've done this a couple of times. Today I saw the blenny 'ramming' the side of the clam, causing it to fall off the rock and land on the sand. When I put my hand in to retrieve the clam the blenny did his little 'ramming' routine on my hand!

I did put the clam back into the rocks and for now he's left it alone. I tried to pick a spot a little further away from his 'favorite' spot, but I guess if he knocks it off again I'll have to give in and put the clam in the sand.

I moved the Chocolate tang out of QT and into the main tank a few days ago. There was one day of 'sparring' between him and both the Kole & the Yellow, but nothing since. The Chocolate is a fair bit smaller and seems to know his place. He is a gorgeous fish!

The crocea clam has officially been re-located to the sandbed. The blenny just would not leave it alone. The clam isn't fully open yet, but it's looking much better now that it's stopped being rammed off it's ledge regularly. I also have a new squamosa clam in the tank temporarily, waiting for my new 55gal to be ready for it. It's settled in really nicely.

I was messing around in the fuge today putting in some egg crate to prevent the chaeto from getting out of the fuge and into the sump and I think I may have also solved the micro-bubble problem finally!!! Amazing. I ended up moving the return pump a little, and the bubbles are greatly reduced. YAY!!! I had actually just expected they were going to be there forever.

Did a water change and got nitrates down to 5. Hopefully the reduced feedings will help keep it there now.

Hey jenjen,
Thought I'd check in to see how you were doing. Last I heard from you, you were talking about a mandarin. Did you get one?
Sunny

Holy wow... someone actually reads this thread?!?

This tank is actually on auto-pilot, but is doing remarkably well. I've been setting up a 55gal as well, and while I've been considering a mandarin for that one I think I'm leaning towards a wrasse instead.

I'll be going out of town for 2 weeks starting next week, but once I'm back I'll be adding some LPS to this tank. :D

Well, they're all possible jumpers. I'm looking for 'least likely to jump', and they make that list. I'm also considering a dwarf angel.

As for the 180gal, I'm looking at possible a second blenny for this tank, and maybe a sifting goby. And then the fish are DONE in this tank.

Wow, it's been a while since I updated this thread! I'm out of town on business at the moment, so my fabulous husband is on tank duty. I talked to him last night and it sounds like everything is going well. Fish are all still alive, he's only forgotten to feed them once since I left. :D

I replaced my actinic bulbs (can't remember if I posted this already) and miraculously the cyano cleared up nearly right away. I am delighted to have a clean-ish sandbed again! I had been holding off adding anything new to the tank until I figured out what was causing it, so I guess I'm good to go.

I'd like another blenny. I'm thinking midas blenny, but I'm still undecided. My bi-colour is king of the rocks, so not sure how he'll take to a new fish. I'm also considering some type of burrowing goby. I did place my rocks directly on the bottom so they'd be stable enough, but it still makes me nervous.

I finally got a new camera (I forget what kind, it's at home)... so new pics coming as soon as I get home next week.

Nearly 5 months since my last update! I've been busy getting the 55g going... slow & steady progress. Here's the 55g thread, incase anyone's interested:

That tank is so different to this one... very low maintenance, slow & peaceful. This one is the crazy active tank that always keeps me on my toes. I'm going to keep posting periodic updates in this thread (and the other one) because it's an easy way for me to be able to see progress in the tank, and it keeps me honest. :D

Today is WC day. I find since I've been doing 10% bi-weekly changes the parameters stay nice. We also upgraded the Vertex to a Bubble King 180 a while back, and I noticed a drop in Nitrate almost immediately. The only reason we upgraded was because the pump in the Vertex was noisy (the BK is silent), but the side effect of lower nitrates is excellent.

Today's parameters (pre-WC):
ammonia 0 (I only check this periodically now)
nitrate <5
temp 79
sg 1.026
calc 380

Most of the corals are settled in, but I did lose a few colonies along the way. My favorite red acan didn't make it, and I only recently replaced it with a red & green colony that's starting to colour up nicely. All the softies are starting to grow again, and the yellow leather is FINALLY looking like it's old self and starting to grow. I've even managed to keep a frogspawn alive (this is my 3rd try) and have added a few more LPS colonies which are doing well so far. Maybe it's the nitrate (or lack of)?

I had added a second clam, and a month or two later my larger clam suddenly died. I'd had that one from the start, so I was pretty upset. Still don't know what happened, but the new one is hanging in there. I'll add another one in a few months, once I'm sure things are ok with the little one. Might try a squamosa next.

Not sure what I last updated for livestock, but here's a current list:

Ocellaris clown pair
Foxface rabbitfish
Kole tang
Yellow tang
Chocolate tang
Sixline wrasse
Blue/green chromis (currently 4)
Bi-colour blenny

Black brittle star
Orange/pink lip conch (2)
Electric blue hermit (2)
Skunk cleaner shrimp
Red cleaner shrimp (2)
Misc snails & small hermits

The focus for the tank now is to add a bit more LPS, and let everything grow out. I'm done adding fish, but may add a few more inverts. And I will be adding some gorgonians once I see the one I recently added doing ok. I'd like to work on automating some of the maintenance (an ATO would be awesome!) and we'll have to add a chiller this summer to prevent the same crash we had last year.

I think we're all updated. Pics coming next.

Thank you!

The tank itself is settling in nicely and I haven't really changed or added much to it. I did switch salt brands, which has helped my LPS enormously. Other than that, I'm trying to figure out how to take good pics, and watching things grow. It's definitely a change for me, since I've been adding-adding-adding to my tanks for 2 yrs now.

Oh, the clown pair seems to be nesting these days. They stay very very close to one another, and are aggressively cleaning off a spot on the overflow (that's right, not hosting in the RBTA or frogspawn). It's fun to watch, and very rewarding to see them so 'happy' in their environment.

Did I ever post that I had one of the chromis living in the overflow? Incase not.. we started with 5 blue/green chromis. One was very small and died shortly after we got him. About a week later another disappeared, and we've had 3 ever since. Maybe 2 months after he disappeared, I found the one living in the overflow (we've since named him Flow).

We couldn't figure out how to get him out, so he's been living in there for probably another two months. Well, on Saturday we finally decided to dismantle the plumbing and try to get him. We finally managed it by removing the plumbing in the overflow then catching him with a brine shrimp net. He's back in the tank now and seems to be getting along ok. He's smaller than the other 3, so fingers are crossed they'll leave him alone.
