jenjen's upgrade to 180gal

I'm having some issues with a couple of zoanthid colonies lately. I have probably 10 or 15 colonies. Two of them are reasonably new, and all the rest I've had for ages - at least a year. I have 2 colonies that closed up a week or so ago, and have not re-opened. All the rest look completely fine.

The 2 closed colonies don't appear to have any pests on them. Nobody is picking on them as far as I can tell. One of them is quite close to two other colonies and those two are fine. The other one is across the tank and quite isolated from everything.

I've checked water quality, it's all normal and very consistent with my numbers over the past year:

Calcium 420
Nitrate 5
Ammonia 0
Phosphate 0
Temp 79-81

Frustrating... I cannot figure out what's going on.

I'm going to do another water change today. Unfortunately I can't get either of the colonies out for a dip without disassembling the tank, so hopefully the water change helps some.

I also have a couple of leathers, mushrooms, RBTA x2 in the tank... all are looking fine and my toadstool is growing like crazy. The system 'seems' totally normal, except these two colonies.

Well, I finally got my bi-colour blenny!

This little guy is a replacement for the only fish casualty I experienced with the move. I've waited and waited for a healthy & colourful one to come in. Worth the wait! I love these little guys.

I QT'd him for 3 weeks, then added him to the tank last weekend. He's doing fabulous. I was worried about my sixline, whose been in this system since the start (he was my first fish). He did chase the new guy for the first day, but a little lights out did the trick and they're doing just fine now. Thank goodness for lots of rocks, and many hidey-holes.

Now all the little guy needs is a name...

Wow, seems I like to go on 6 month sabbaticals! Yet another 6 months has passed. I find it interesting how the tank ebs and flows. Amazingly, I've managed to keep all these fish alive. The corals on the other hand... well we're not doing so well with the zoa's. I have another thread about that, and hopefully we'll sort it out soon.

Pics to follow tomorrow.

Hello again RC!

Every now & then I feel like I want to start a log about my tank. Then I remember that some time ago (long long ago!) I started a 'build thread' which is really more of a log thread, and if I'm going to post any 'deep thoughts' that's probably the place to post them so I don't bother anyone!

It's actually been more than 2 years since my last post in this thread, but what the heck... here I go again!

My tank is still the 180g. I started it in April 2009, then moved it with me to a new home in August 2010. Since then it's really been a roller coaster ride with the tank, with periods of LOVE IT, and periods of WHAT AM I DOING?! I've gone through various ideas of what I wanted in a tank and also varying budget options, and made modifications along the way. For the past 2 years or so the tank has been 'softies only', and I've been focussed on stabilizing and simplifying things.

This tank is now destined to be softies & leathers forever (or until I change my mind!). I am in LOVE with how it's coming along now! I've stabilized my parameters and I have my skimmer on a timer (only runs a couple hours a day) and things are finally coming along for the softies which makes me happy.

I also adore every one of my fish. My fish list right now is:

Foxface
Yellow Tang
Kole Tang
Osc Clown Pair - these guys spawn ALL THE TIME!
Female Bangaii Cardinal - she needs a man!
Flame Angel
Sixline Wrasse
Bi-colour Blenny
Yellow Watchman Goby with Pistol Shrimp - aka the reno crew!

I also have all sorts of inverts, and will be adding some more shrimp this weekend.

I'm glad my tank thread (such as it is!) is still in New to the Hobby, because although I've been in the hobby a number of years now, I've only just learned over the past few years that the 'important' thing with a system is to have it suit your own needs/wants. If you love leathers and softies and beautiful fish (who your kids have named!) then go with that! It's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind around here, but the 'trendy' system doesn't actually work for everyone, and honestly isn't the 'only' way to do things.

I may take some photos of the system one day soon. For now I just wanted to ensure I'm not one of those 'vanishing' tank threads. My tank is going on 5 years and is still going strong - I'm loving it more than ever.

Happy Reefing!
