Jims 16" bubble

Jim, great idea on the hidden return w/ overflow plumbing in the light stand....that took some thinking "outside the tank". now I might actually have to start working on that 2nd vase :)

I found the link to this thread last night when I was checking in on your vase build.

I am also so glad to see that the hidden overflow works. I have wanted to try something similar, for a clean minimalist look, but have never gotten beyond sketches. I was thinking of trying it with some tubs, but now I don’t have too. I’ll definitely be following this build. I can’t wait to see the outcome. Thanks for the inspiration!

Another option for solving the problem of all the water draining out though the return in the case of power outage. Instead of a check valve, you could have the return line follow the overflow route (you could zip tie the return line to the overflow). A small tee at the top going from the return line and emptying into the overflow, perhaps airline tubing with a valve, would probably work as a siphon break for the return.

I think that would work, but the way I understand it you decrease flow with every 90 & T you put in the return path. The extra U turns & 90s might be a problem. I found a check valve that has a union on each side so it can be removed. I planed on getting two of them so I could from time to time trade them out & clean the one that had been in the system. The other saving grace is I have a generator that kicks in after 10 seconds of power outage. We live out in the sticks, & when power goes out could be awhile coming back on.

Well I did a leak test & many plumbing/flow tests. Now the fit test.

It Is ugly right now, but just had to see how the stand fit in it's future setting. The box under the tube is for storing my laptop case. Part of the deal for getting the OK from the wife to set up this tank was to incorporate places for some of my messy stuff that sits on the end table by my chair. There will be a slot near the top with a shelf for wallet, phone, papers, drinks etc. Also will have a door in front to access the sump area. I love the look of the rectangular box round tube & bubble tank!

This shows the how the bubble tank will be located in relation to my main tank.

Did a little more work.

Did layout for access holes. Half inch PVC cuts & files/sands great. The hole in front is for sump access, two holes on sides near top are for my shelf. The pipe fits snug on the two-by circle, I plan on counter sinking some screws through the pipe into the two-bys to hold the pipe & box together. I know it's ugly right now, but once every thing is puttied, sanded & painted I'm sure it will look great.

Also I do wood turning & plan on turning a wood top to finish it off.

Whoa, this tank is going to be amazing once it's up and running! You're doing an awesome job with everything and I love the sphere shape. Can't wait to see it with some livestock.

Thanks all, I appreciate the interest in this project. This has become a personal challenge to try & make the idea actually happen. I try not to think about how much time & money you can spend on a nonstandard 7gal tank. Guess the cool factor is what makes it worth it?

I got some 1/4" acrylic for the bottom of the sump area & the shelf. I also got a jigsaw blade for cutting plastic from the plastic store. Cutting & glueing next up.

Got the acrylic bottom & shelf in!

Bent a piece of acrylic with a heat gun for the door to the sump access. Thought I could bend it good enough but couldn't get it smooth enough so I glued it to the piece of 1/2" PVC I cut out.

Not very good looking yet, but with some sanding, putty & paint think it will be fine. Planning on holding the door in with couple pieces of velcro, no hinges. Next step, have to find out what kind of primer I'll need to use to make regular paint to stick to plastic.

I have been trying to decide that very thing. I originally was going to, then I thought it might give better access to sump if I could remove the shelf when needed. The evaporation issue is a good reason to seal it up though. While I'm building it is nice to be able to take it out as needed, but think I will seal it in when all done & tested out.

Thanks
Jim

Interesting looks like a snow globe. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on creating your rock scaping so you can turn her over can remove for easy cleaning and glass cleaning.

Hadn't thought about magnets, sure they would work. I just happen to have some stick on velcro on hand.

This is kinda like a snow globe, isn't it. Two little fishes make a flexible nano glass cleaner. I already have one for a 3gal cylinder vase pico tank. They work great on curved glass.
