Jims 16" bubble

Shouldn't be much of a cycle. I've had the center rock & bunch of rock in the sump in my SPS sump for about a month, sand & water from SPS tank. I looked this morning & shaw some pods running around, & put some phytoplankton in for them. Skimmer still breaking in (wish I would have thought to run it in the SPS system for break-in period). Will see but hoping all will be well tomorrow to start stocking.

Thanks for the encouragement, it helps.

Still no stocking. Skimmer still not skimming, no foam just biggish bubbles. And the bigger problem was/is bubbles in the sump. The whole thing runs pretty quiet, but the air bubbles mixed with the water coming into the sump causes a lot of condensation. Normally this might not be a problem at all, but I was planning on using the auto feeder with dry food in there so all that condensation would clog up the feeder. So I built a bubble buster.

I know yet another item for the worlds most elaborate fish bowl. It works great, stops about 90% of the bubbles. I think if I could have made it a little bigger there would be no bubbles at all. The 1/2" pvc U-turn on the top is so the bubbles that pop don't splatter out in the sump & condensate on every thing. I put the same thing on the T where water first comes into the sump instead of a cap with a hole drilled in it, because it splattered all over the walls, it now drips constantly.

Any way the saga continues, more & pixs later.

That is a neat thing. Can you describe how it works? Where water enters and exits?

Water comes in from tank at bottom right, goes up & most bubbles pop & air can leave through the 1/2" pvc U-turn at the top, then over the baffle & down, then up through the bottom of 1" pvc pipe & into sump with just a few tinny bubbles by then. Now if the skimmer would only skim!

Don't know how that got posted twice. We are out of town & the motel connection is odd.

Any way the bubble buster is basically a very small baffle system like in most sumps.

Looks good Jim. I might need one of those. Skimmers sometimes take a few weeks to really get going.

Just put my LPS NPS in. Until Mr. Skimmer decides to skim can't put the filter feeders in. All of these pix taken with flash as all but the big orange Dendro don't really open up until lights out. I got a little blue green chromie today. Can you find him? He is watching me.

Red Balanophyllia I got from LA about a month ago. He is really red when closed up. The thing that looks like a purple lumpy rock bottom right is a tiny clam, it was a hitchhiker on a NPS rock. I'm assuming it is NPS even though it never opens more than a small crack.

Last but not least my scallop from original NPS setup. He is still scooting around the tank looking for his spot.

That's it for now. Waiting on Mr. Skimmer. Will post more pix when there is more.

Haven't had much to tell because I've had nothing but troubles since last update. I finally called Tunzes about the skimmer. Roger there was very nice & told me that skimmer needs to be in a fairly calm flow, not like my sumps turnover. I had already made a new bubble trap, which works even better, also diverted flow away from the skimmer. Still skims very little. But the bigger problem was the filter feeder NPS I had added weren't happy in the bubble tank. I tried feeding more, feeding less, more flow, more water changes (to make up for lack of skimming). Nothing made any difference, they still wouldn't open up. I finally took them to LFS before they got so bad off they couldn't make it back to good heath. I'm going to leave the NPS in the last photos in & get a bubble tip nem when I can find the right one.

Going to wait & see if this skimmer is going to work out or not & let the tank run awhile.

Along with this, I have been trying to starve out some hair algae in my SPS system for months now. I Hate, Hate that stuff! I spent all day today building & installing a algae scrubber on that system. I have tried every thing else, this is about the only thing I know of left to do. No pix of it, but could take some if any one wants to see it.

I'll post again when I have some positive development to Tell/show.

Hey Jim I would like to see pics of that algea scrubber. I was thinking of making a small one for my 35.

OK might be a day or two. As you might have guessed mine is not exactly a standard design. I only had a horizontal space to work with, so I have a horizontal scrubber. Hope it works & starves out the HA in the display!

Very cool build, Jim! It's given me some ideas and inspiration for a new tank myself with your overflow design. I'm excited to see the future of this setup.

Thanks guys

Jeremy B I do most of my buying at Premium, want to stop by & see the place when I'm in Indianapolis next time
