Cool!

Still, sounds like an interesting job...given my interest in PT, sounds like it would be a rewarding type of job, working with prosthetics and such.

Wow...that one's alot nicer than the one I was carving up. Mine looks kinda like a log an army of woodpeckers has been working on.

He's trying to trick you - don't use a solid piece of wood becuase it will check and crack. Laminate pieces together and then throw it on the lathe to get the shape. Maybe screw one of those SEASL thongs to the bottom when you're finished.

no the old stlye sockets are made from a solid block of wood.

and made by Hand, no lathe....No kiddin

Most all sockets now are carbonfiber with Laminate resin formed over it ......

After seening that pick, ur hired !

How old? It's really hard to find large, stable (old growth) wood anymore - that's why you see so much laminated stuff nowadays.

Why wouldn't they use a lathe to rough everything out? Hogging out that much wood must have taken forever.

That's not my work - I hate turning. If I made a pegleg, it would come out Mission or Shaker styled. Although, a cabriole with a ball and claw at the bottom would be cool (and probably scare small children)

We use a trauntman to hollow out the sockets and ur right about the wood...the solid pc is made by a company and its pcs together

I was just messin with shooter

I've never heard of one of those before. I did a little poking around and it seems as though there is an entire line of woodworking machinery made just for the orthotics industry. Is the trautman stationary and you move the wood into it or the other way around?
