Very nice Tomini , I almost bought one this weekend on an impulse but decided to wait and do a little research first. I don't mean to hijack but was hoping that you could shed some light on the temperament and overall success rate of this beautiful fish. Does their coloration change as the reach adulthood?

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I don't know about if they retain their coloration because this is my first Tomini. However, I know my LFS had one for about 5 years now in their reef, and he still looks great.

You want to get one that has dark body w/ bright fins. They get really pale when they are stressed.

Thanks,

James

James,

very nice small joculator - perfect choice. Please keep me posted how reefsafe he turns oput to be. I am looking for a "pair" for my tank, but currently only find adult fish here

Greetings Peter, how are you? So far he has not touched any of my corals or Zoas. He was quarantined in my LPS only tank for over 8 weeks before coming into my main display. I hope he stays that way. Nick (nbd13) also has this fish, and he tells me that the Joculator is a model citizen in his 270 gal. tank.

Thanks,

James

naka- how much was the guy?.. was he wild or captive bred? thanks
Joculator was w.c. and he was very expensive. I rather not say how much I paid.

Then it's good that we talk about the joculator :D
LOL

Peter can you post some pics of your Liopropoma species (candy basslets)?
Liopropoma swalesi
Liopropoma carmabi

I purchased a pair, but the smaller tends to resemble L. carmabi. I seriously don't think it's L. carmabi, but the coloration is totally different.

Thanks,

James

Beautiful fish... C. joculators are very rare, with less than 400 taken a year by the one licensed collector in the Cocos Islands (joculator is also found at Christmas Island where there is no collection). He doesn't collect much else there... (why would you?) They are not a deep water angel like other $$$$ Centropyge, but remoteness and one collector will drive the price up...

Please keep us updated, as there are few reports on this fish in a reef tank... I know Nick (nbd13) well and beyond him and you I believe that's it on RC, although there are pairs out there...

Hey Everyone,

First off beautiful pics James!

Peter, I have had my joculator in my 275 gallon SPS tank for a good 6-8 months now. He has been a perfect citizen, not picking on anything in there. Besides the ton of SPS in there, I also have some LPS, clams and zoos in the tank.

When I bought him, he was probably a little less than 2", maybe 1 3/4". In the past few months, he has really taken off. He is now atleast 3" and a good 1/2" thick!

Regarding the wild caught vs captive bread issue....

I have not heard of anyone offering captive bread specimens of C. joculator. The one person that "might" be able to pull this off is Frank Baensch (owner of RCT Hawaii).

As John (copps) said, the only ones that have entered the trade have come from that one diver that he speaks of.

These are a great addition to any tank.

I will have some free time tomorrow and will try to take some updated pics of mine and post them here.

Also, Peter, are you planning on a pair or small group of these guys? If you don't mind me asking, do these fish go for more or less than they do over here? I am excited to see how the pair or group work out for you. Please post some pics when you get them :).

Look for pics tomorrow guys.

Nick

P.S. I forgot, look at my avator for a pic, haha. I will get some new images tomorrow and post them though ;).

@ James,

sure I have Lioporpoma pictures, but they where taken before I worked on my foto skills and I don't have the carmabi nor the swalesi anymore - only the rubre. So please excuse the poor quality:

Send me picture (info@reefsafe.de) of the one in doubt and I will try to tell you what you got.

I am currently looking for a group of carmabi to see if you can also keep member sof this genus in groups, but I need a few offered to pick the correct sex out - unfortunately currently I only see single fish. BTW, pairs works perfect with this genus as one can see in the pictures.

@Nick

Takeing the size of the joculator into account and the fact that I only ;) have a 320 g tank I would only go for a pair. I like to give my fish plenty of space and a pair is the max which I consider possible. Retail price must be somewhere between 600- 800 $ in Europe, but I have not seen them in retail yet ;)

Thank you Peter for the pictures. I believe I have L. rubre and L. swalesi. I can get a picture of rubre, but swalesi is nearly impossible. I'll email you when I get a nice picture of both.

Thanks,

James
