Joe's 225g Leemar build

It might be a little too early for this build thread, but Im going to start it, because Im sure ideas that will help me out are going to pour in. I made a deal to get the tank: I am not going to set it up until I become a Department of Fish and Game Warden, CHP officer, or a PD officer. This thing is going to be in my front room, taunting me. So hopefully I can get the ball rolling quickly! lol.

225g 72x30x24 Leemarr 3 sided starphire, eurobraced, black silicone, trapezoid overflow.

Im very impressed with the build quality of this tank. The glass looks to be about 1/2" to 5/8" thick, and the silicone is flawless. The bottom is double paned glass, with PVC/acrylic underneath. Even the overflow is about 1/2" acrylic, with no glass behind it. I just have one gripe: I wanted black silicone, which it is. The problem is the bottom panel is applied with black silicone, but clear silicone over it. The tank was not warrantied if it didnt have this clear silicone. I suppose its not a big deal, considering I'll be using a sandbed anyhow. If thats the only complaint I can come up with, Im a happy man. I havent seen an AGE tank in person, but this is the 2nd nicest tank Ive seen, next to Elos tanks, but 1/4 of the cost of an Elos 160XL (The 160XL 200g is $4500 for the tank ONLY) and its bigger.. Im very pleased with it, I hope I can get a law enforcement job rolling quickly, so I can load this up with equipment. I got a great deal on this, and all I had to give up was my cube/stand/sump, a pair of Tunze 6080s, and a mag 18. I couldnt refuse it! I almost passed it up when I got to Tom's in Fullerton, it was almost TOO big. At least I wont be looking to upgrade anytime soon lol.

This tank will be 99% SPS, with the ocassional nice LPS that might catch my eye. So recommendations or suggestions should take that into consideration.

Plans for equipment so far:
ATI Powermodule 60" 10x80w fixture
Royal Exclusive/Bubble King/Vertex Alpha Cone 300
(2) Tunze 6205 W/ 7096 controller
I may incorporate a 6212 wavebox, to utilize that eurobrace.
Im not decided opeon much other equipment at this time.

Im looking to have a shorter stand built. I dont get to watch TV programs of my choice (the girl gets the remote, unless football is on). So I spent plenty of time looking at my tanks. I want it to be about 30" tall, so its lower and easier to view, while Im sitting down. So I feel that should help. The top will also be open, since the eurobrace job was done so beautifully.

The tank looks very sleek. I think that is one of the nicer internal overflow I have seen. Looking forward to see your progress.

To answer Waynem question, I believe the fish is actually a dogface puffball, however I could be mistaken.;)

The dogface puffball is the common name for her, I believe the scientific name is furrballous maximus. Tim, I was thinking the same thing about the overflow. I was hesitant to pull the trigger on the tank, because I Really wanted an external overflow (had to go AGE) or a Calfo style (Custom order, and I wouldnt have got the deal on the tank). After seeing the design of the overflow, and how well its constructed, I decided it should work out very well. I was also pleased with the two holes drilled in the back of the eurobracing. Now I have somewhere to run my 6205 powercords through, without having to go AROUND the eurobracing, so it should help keep the design clean looking. The eye candy will probably be sparse, lol.

IVe got a lead on a great skimmer for dirt cheap. If I can work something out, I'll post it up ;)

I Didnt want to jinx it, but I have a deal finalized on an external ATB Medium with airstar. It has a small crack, that doesnt go through to the outside. I figured Id just heat up some thin acrylic, so it forms to the skimmer, then use some weldon to fasten it.

Great start Joe - yeah the internal center overflow looks way cooooool !!

For sure will be plenty of lights with your 10x80w fixture !!

I missed out on the ATB medium. Looks like I jinxed myself afterall lol. Oh well, at least now I have a few months to get some reviews on that BK/Vertex Alpha 300

Nice Joe! You must be super motivated to get your new career started now having that bad boy sitting and teasing you.
I don't know much about Lemar tanks, but seeing more of them pop on on RC lately. Are they in the same price range as AGE and AO?

Rob

It is a little teasing, Rob, lol. I got back in that zone where I was going to "Take it easy" during school this fall. So I figure this should reward me if I go ahead and finish the 20 units i need... or get accepted to other agencies I applied for.

As far as Leemarr being up there with, AGE and AO....Absolutely not. I think theyre the best bang for the buck, though. Thats why they are so popular, IMO. They look like a higher end tank, but dont cost an arm and a leg. I got an estimate on a 72x36x20 AGE, and it was around $3800, and an actual quote of $2800 from AO. The Leemarr 72x36x20 was going to run about $1900 IIRC. As far as my tank this 72x30x24 retails at $1800 I was told. I only paid $1100 for it, though, since it was on display at MAX this year.

I have never seen an AGE or AO tank in person, so I cant really judge them fairly. But Ive seen a lot of Leemars, and theyre the second nicest tanks Ive seen, behind the Elos tanks... but theyre 1/4 of the cost lol. So I think their popularity is due to their affordability, while looking like, and being built like, a top notch tank.

Lol, Ive thought so many times of how I could just rig a set up. I was going to place it on the ground and just fill it with saltwater and a skimmer, watching fish swim around lol.... its only been here for a week! lol. This surely is going to suck. Hopefully my test goes well this May 9th.

Good luck on the test. I know what you mean though. I had my 250 set up, then decided to sell the house, so I tore it right back down. It sat in the garage for a year, with the house still on the market, when I finally said to heck with it and set it up anyway. Then moved a few months later.:(

lol. Thats part of whats holding me back. I just know that within 8-12 months we will be moving. I probably shouldnt have bought such a large tank until I actually bought a house. This 50g Im setting up has gotta keep me content in the meantime. I know the second i set up this 225, we'd end up moving.

You should at least take the wrapping off for a picture so we can really see it it sounds like a beautiful tank.. Wrap it back up after the pic though to keep it looking good=)

I know if I removed the wrapping, itd get scratched and I couldnt live with myself, lol. Thats what that tear on the left hand side is... to compare the starphire to the regular glass. I almost wish I had gotten the 48x30x20 that was the same price WITH the stand lol. I know that had I went that route, Id be wanting another upgrade eventually, though.

Youre probably right. I couldnt refuse the price. I just got a little nervous because I sold my tank, equipment and live stock for this within 2 weeks lol.

Good luck on the test! I know how nerve racking the wait is, I actually just took the LAPD test last week. I'm keeping myself busy by researching and building a 180 gallon tank :)

Nice, congrats on that. Im not sure how Id feel on the LAPD. Its higher risk than most law enforcement, and lower pay. Kind of a bad combination, lol. Good luck with the test hopefully all goes well for you.

Thanks =) Yeah I get a lot of people questioning me about choosing LA over the other departments. They just increased the starting salary to 60~ and they offer a lot more opportunity's to advance due to the size of the department.

How are you planning the filtration under tank or doing a fish room? I wish I had the space for a room for mine but I'm getting stuck with under thank. With a 75g AGA tank as the sump space might be a bit tight.
