Joe's Clam

Joe has a large clam that his wife Rita would like for us to have. The only problem is that I live in Texas flying back early Friday morning (6:30 AM) and need all the material needed to bring back on the plane as checked baggage. This is a large calm from what I understand so will need two large plastic bags along with an insulated foam inner box and a maybe cardbboard outter box. Can anyone help?

I will be arriving into the Springs around 11:00 AM this morning and will be checking back on this form once I get to the hotel later in the afternoon. Send email or PM if you can help.

Thanks

call the airline first though, they wouldnt allow water on the checked luggage when we were flying delta from houston. Wouldnt allow water in the plane carry on either, finally got a bunch of people on the phone and got someone who knew what was going on and let us do it.
It was a hastle and if i was running close to departing time I would have had to trash the corals because they were refusing to let it on the plane.
I'd call and get a name just to be sure if It were me.
The excuse they gave was the box or bag or styro could leak and cause corrosion to the plane!

better get a styro for it then and in a box with several large bags!

We couldnt even get fish bags big enough for mine, had to use trash bags, and those suck but it was only a half hour ride home atleast.

Another option is to send it air freight, you don't have to be a business to ship air cargo. Can't believe they told you you can't send water how do you think we get our fish from half way around the world.

Greetings,

I was over at Joe’s house today and saw the clam in person and it does not look like it is in very good shape. It did not extend beyond the shell. Could be as a result of poor water conditions did not test so just guessing. It might be better if someone in the club could first see if they can save and nurse it back to good health rather than try and transport to back to Texas at this time. The stress could kill it off. As for the size it is about 10” long by 8” high.

What do you guys think?

You could be right, If its not extending thats a very unhappy clam and may not even make it out of the bag. I know its sad, but I have thought before if I was in the hospital or really sick, my tank would have to be cared for by someone daily like I do, I know my wife couldnt do it so it would be tough but I'd want all the corals to all atleast go to my friends and be taken care of well. If theres anything I can do let me know, I could help work on the tank or something. I didnt know Joe or his wife but you can ask for help I'm sure anyone here would be willing to pitch in, I just dont know what needs to be done with everything.
Chris

After thinking about the clam situation overnight I don’t think that it is a good idea to try and take it home with me on this trip. I think that someone needs to try a bring it back to good health which could be as simple as getting the water parameters back where they should be just guessing since I have no way of testing on this trip. With the schedule that I and the family have today there is no time to move it anyway with the service for Joe this afternoon and flying out first thing in the morning it just will not work. Also at this time Rita, Joe’s wife, has many more important things that she is dealing with. The best course of action to take would be to see what can be done in the next few days after things have settled down a little. I know that many of you in the club know Rita and can help work through these issues in the coming weeks.

I would like to thank everyone who stepped up to try and make this happen.

Anytime David. It was good meeting you today, just wish it were under different circumstances. Have a safe trip back and enjoy your week in Japan.

Sitting here at the airport in Japan ready to come home after being here a week and wanted to let you know that I think that Rita is ready to do something with the aquarium she told my wife anyway via email. Have you been in touch with her?
