I have been into reefkeeping since 2000. I attended the once/month SEASL meetings during the 8 month season until I took my weekend option job about 6 years ago, since that time, I was never able to attend any of their functions because they only take place on Saturdays
With the popularity of the hobby and huge growth here on RC, a few of us got together with the idea of starting a new club that caters to folks more than just one Saturday morning every month. We were getting together informally for Pizza Nights and tank tours anyway and when 20+ people kept showing up we decided to go for it...also, we had some major issues with the way SEASL was run at the time...but that is ancient history.
Long story short, joining SLASH helps the hobby in Saint Louis by reaching out to more people and by creating more friendships. There are a lot of people that are here in SLASH that aren't in SEASL and vice versa, so it depends on what "you" want more than anything.
We are more informal, more likely to get together just to BS, drink a couple beers and hang out in front of someone's tank...we do weeknight stuff and weekend stuff.
No matter if you join or not, we still hope to get to know you and show you some quality pizza joints

Regardless of what category you fall in, it's $20 a year or something like that to be involved in everything such as trips, meeting, discounts, etc...
You don't have to choose. If you have the time to get to even a couple of each throughout the year, it's worth it in my opinion.
Now, not everyone can make weekend meetings and not everyone can make float trips in the middle of the week

But...
after reading a lot of recent posts... I might be the new "old guy" and I don't know how SLASH would take to having a smart a$$ in the group.
So, it sounds like I take the wife and kids to the SEASL meetings and leave them home for the SLASH events. ;o) I am not sure about the pizza thing. I was raised in South St. Louis and there is only ONE pizza! IMO's. All of the rest are just bread with toppings. Any preference to paying dues? Or would it be best to just pay-up at the next get together?
Sounds like fun, I have lots to learn. I've never been a fan of book lernin.

Many members bring their wives, kids, mistresses or whatever to our "get togethers". I don't recall a pizza night where anyone walked away looking lit and I have not witnessed any fights.
We're pretty much a mile mannered group of folks who like to spend time with each other discussing whatever we please in a relaxed manner. I think a lot of folks would agree that spending time talking to other reefers is one of the best ways to learn about the hobby.

You are sadly mistaken on this comment. If you're from south city and you've never been to Cusanelli's, you are missing out. Faraci's now in Ballwin is AWESOME as well.

Heck no, you don't have to leave the wife and kids at home.. Our get togethers or nothing like that at all. There is always a large group of us that takes up most the sq footage at a restaurant while we are out, but nothing crazy.. There are a lot of us that don't drink while we are out. Its just fun to sit around and BS with others, about anything.
