JonnyU's 180 Reef

I would highly recommending doing some research on siporax if you want more bio filter.

I think with all 100lbs of rock and all the sand I have I should be okay. What would be a sign that I need more bio filtration? Ammonia level not at zero?

Perhaps more denitrifying bacteria. High nitrates.

You could basically just have more fish and not have to worry about high nutrients.

I was thinking maybe a biopellet reactor or bashsea bio reactor like this

Well, siporax is just a media for denitrifying bacteria. Just additional space for replacement of liverock. That's all.

Does that stuff need to be put used drip filter application? Or just putting a bunch of it in a mesh bag in the sump okay ?

I run mine in a sump. Media bag is a good idea because you should clean detritus off of it from time to time by rinsing it with salt water from time to time.

Best application is low flow through a media reactor.

Search for a thread "matrix and siporax". Lots of good reading. Two liters costed me $45 shipped.

Johnny the Siporax would be an excellent idea. You have minimal rock. Siporax is just a live rock substitute. It has an insane surface area for bacteria to grow on. There is a huge thread in the SPS forum. There is no dosing, just throw it in there and let it do its thing. Some run in a reactor, but honestly a bunch in a bin or eggcrate box should do. I have a reactor with about 1.5L but then added a few more L and they are just in mesh bags. It doesn't hurt anything and can only help, especially if you are going for a high bioload. Matrix is another similar product and is easier and cheaper to get here.

Very cool, Jonny. The light spread is pretty cool as well.

Also, why you holding out on us about your anthias pick up?

Lol well I ended up picking up 6 Lyretail anthias. One of them seems to be dominant so waiting for her to turn. I want some sunburst anthias. Also waiting to find a nice naso tang with streamers

Here some tank shots

Have you noticed any issues with aggression among your fish? Do you feel like they have enough cover to sleep and hide if they need?

The tank looks like its coming along nicely.

They seem okay. I have two large ones in my frag tank and I don't see them bothering anyone. The ones in the display small so don't think they would even think about it.

Well my phosphate 0.00 and my nitrates are 0.00. So decided to listen to friend of mine and try out dosing nitrate to raise my numbers a little. So trying stump remover aka Potassium nitrate. Let see how it goes

I dose nitrate from time to time. Go slow. Like anything else, it takes time for what you add to show up on a test kit. I don't know why you'd think it would show up as soon as it dissolves, LOL. But in my experience it tends to creep up on you. That said, dosing nitrate is relatively safe as long as you don't overdo it, especially if you start with 0.

Well have Made a few doses no results. I bought a new test kit because the old was expired by 3 months. No change. So what should I do? Try a different brand test kit ?
I'm dosing 5ml every two day
