I understand the priciple of in and out water movement from the pump, but what about when the pump losses power, wont gravity pull the water down the outlet side of the pump until the water has drianed below the oulet retuns in the two holes? How do i keep the water from back syphoning is my main question here? Why couldn't i use the two overflow holes drains for the feeds to the pump. Then use the outlets of the pump to pump through the two holes in the center of the tank and to the overflow outlet pipes to the top of the tank. Im just really confussed on how to stop the back syphon. maybe a valve or somthing I see people use holes in the bottom of their tanks all the time to add water movment but just am confussed on how. Thanks

No dude, wrap your head around this... One or two inlet holes in the back of your tank with the original two whole on the bottom for your outlet. As water is drawn in to the pump it is then forced out of the two holes you already have. If the power goes out to the pump, the water can't drain anywhere becuase there is no space for the water to go. If you have a leak in your closed loop pump or your plumbing that is a different story. But as long as your seals and connections are watertight there will be no drainage. Just no water movement. Capiche?

Haha, I work in 39145 and live in Brandon. We'll have to compare tanks sometime after you get yours up and running.

That stand is a beast. Theoretically, it should actually hold about 9 tons. But I would suggest notching the 4x4s so the 2x6s can rest directly on a solid surface instead of just being bolted to the side of the 4x4s. The compressive strength of the wood is a hell of a lot more than the shear strength of fasteners (in most cases). Also, you need some lateral support.

Hey i dont know where brandon is, but I would love to see another big reef tank, maybe we can arane a time sometime down the line When I finsh the tank. Thats a great idea with notching the 4 x 4's so Ill give that idea shot, hopefully Ill have the stand built by this weekend. ill post pict's as soon as I do. I will be buffing out some scratches as well this weekend. But thanks man.

I totally understand the principle now. thanks

Well, good luck building the stand.

And, from west to east...Jackson > Pearl > Brandon > Pelahatchie > Morton > Forest

Glad you got it. So at what point in the overall setup process are you at right now?

Gotta build the stand, buy a Mag 24 or 36, Buy a Cap 1800 pump for my skimmer, some live rock from marcorcks, and some salt. I think thats it but god knows? lol

WELL, stand is in progress. Hope to finish tonight, and begin demo in the wall in my living room hopefully tonight as well. I also got a little war wound, when I was trying to hold down a piece of wood while i was drilling with my 6" long bit, and it came up though the wood and drilled into my hand. Ouuchhhhh. I couldn't get my hand to stop bleeding for a while. there was a trail of blood from my partty rooom in my house to the front bathroom. My wife helped me out by pouring peroxide over the wound/hole in my hand and patching me up with a big band aid, and a wrap of tape around my hand, and I called it a night. lol. anyhow heres a pick of the stand so far.

I hear ya. Im moving as fast as I can with the project, especially since I have to work everyday from 8-5pm lol. :D and pulling late nighters working on the tank. But heres another pick for ya, I completed the hard part of the stand, now just gotta add front doors, and handles, etc. Then Im building two 1' columns to go on each side of the tank to house my two closed loop holes iill be drilling in the side of the tank. Anyhow heres the pick...

Well heres another peak at what im trying to accomplish with the satnd. im building two 79" tall columns to help me hide the cloosed loop drians im going to drill in the sides of the tank. Hopefully by the end of the weekend ill be done with the stand except for paiting, and I can start back working on buffing out the scratches in the tank. I stoped on the tank on like 2000grit. But I started on 1000, then 1500, then 2000 is where I finished then stoped. now Ive only got 6 more grits to go on this big 270 tall. I am having oh so much fun using my muslces to sand the whole thing by myself..... :mad2:

Anyhow enough of my wineing, heres the stand skelton. Oh by the way it will be trimed out with decorative trim and painted black when done.

Ok guys a little update. ive been busy working on the stand day by day after work. Im pretty much done, all I need to do is put on 4 doors on the stand, nad paint the whole thing black and im done with that beast. Then I have to mark and beat a 4 ft long x 2 1/2ft hole in the wall and case that in. That will be the open viewing area from my office although the tank is 6' long, I can only open the whole up in the wall 4' due to how my exterior wall and interior walls flow. Im taking pictures as I do these things, i know my build is going slow, but Im getting there, lol. Hope to have the stand and wall knocked out before friday, when I go out of town for the weekend. Anyhow, just updating those who were interested. i did how one question however. i decided to go with a 400watt Mh in the middle of my two 250 MH, so a total of 900watts, I was wondering how high I should hang my 6" high fixture? 1' above tank or more? Im not sure but i know how bright & hot those bulbs can be on a acylic tank as well. So any advice or suggestion on the height would be nice.

i also wonder how i can have 1500+ views but only 30 somthing posts? Oh well, I will still keep updating this post. later guys & gals.:strooper:

A 400 watt bulb over an acrylic center brace, make sure you keep an eye on it so it doesnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t start to warp. I would think you need to raise it at least 1 foot over the brace.

Yea im thinking the same thing. Ill have some fans in the hood so hopefully that will help.
Meanwhile yesterday I finshed the stand building, now I just have to paint it, oh and I started to knock out the 4' hole in the wall for the viewing panel area. My wife started freaking out when she heard me beating on the wall. lol. heres the pict's below.

My wife freaked out too when she heard me drilling into the floor.
