JR Aquatics 180 Gallon Nano Reef

JR - so what's your next steps? or rather... what would you like to change, achieve in or with your tank 6-12 months from now?

Let the corals grow and get a lot more fish. Equipment wise, I won't change a thing. I may get 2 of the new streams for the back corners when they come out. As I can see when the acros start growing out it will take a toll on the amount of flow in my tank.

I blink in this hobby and everyone changes everything

Dart Gold
Vortech 2.0
New Streams

My tank is obsolete and it's not even up yet!

What fish were you thinking? I'm debating on wrasses and a flame angel - mostly b/c I'd like to keep the pod populations up without effort.

Here's my thoughts
4 tangs (SC, PB, Blue, ___)
2 bellus angels
2 clowns
20 of those blue/silver cardinals

Thinking about
1-2 rabbit fish
Radiant wrasse
Mystery wrasse
flame angel
gobies/anthias

awesome build.i think i am finally convinced to give ozone a try.what size unit are you using.also can tyou show a pic of yourt sump.i just installed a dart on my tank and im having serious trouble with micro bubbles.i too have a 180 reef with a 75 gallon sump but i made a coast to coast overflow so i have plenty of drain to accomidate the big pump.im about to tear the sump apart and redo it.so pics would help greatly.thanks

I only ran ozone for 2 weeks and didn't notice a huge difference at this point. The skimmer seems to be doing more than it's fair share in water purification. I also have everything coming off of one overflow going into a filter sock.

Everything upgrades. I wouldn't worry about that so much. Like myself, I will not be getting the new streams till they have at least been out for 6-8 months so they can work out an issues it may have. Even at that time period it is still a risk with the cost of these devices. I would exclude the Flame angel if I were you, to unpredictable. You take a chance with all your zoas, LPS and clams. I also wouldn't worry about your pod population, they will reproduce as fast as they are eaten. I have a very fat mandarin and wrasses with a huge pod population. I think a fuge plays a part in my abundance of pods too.

by the sounds of it, i should worry more about the rabbit eating my zoas than the flame angel... but you're right.

I'll likely hold off on the wrasse/mandarin and maybe angel for 6+ months to let everyone get fully populated.

btw - i like your carpet protection... I was thinking about using scotchguard - but I'm not sure how well that works. A giant spong the size of a sofa would also work well based on how much water I typically spill =)

I didn't even see that you listed rabbitfish, they are known for mowing down hair algea and zoas. I just lay down the traffic runner when I work on the tank, otherwise I roll it up. Pods populate fast, really fast. When I was cycling my tank the sides of the tank always looked cloudy do to the over population of pods.

so you dont think its worth buying an ozone machine.i have heard that they make the water very clear but i like to hear everyones input about them.thanks for the pics.i think i will be changing out my sump

An ozone unit is nice to have but not necessary. At this time my tank stays crystal clear without it. But it is fairly new and what I consider a light bioload. I can see myself using it more in the future. Personally I think good random circulation along with aggressive skimming from a good skimmer is the key to good clear SW.

well i will be in the process of replicating the reeflo orca 250 next week.i am currently running a asm-g4x modded and im just not seeing the best performance so i think i am well capable of building one so im going to give it a shot.thanks for the info.

JR, Great growth on the corals... damn!

Do you add any additional supplements to the tank? Coral Vite? Strontium & Molybdenum? Essential aminos? Or just water changes?

Do you add any Phytoplankton/Zooplankton for the LPS/SPS?

What Large schuran type media are you using in the calcium reactor? ARM? Gen-x?

100 gallons of water to make and I'll be up and operational. I did discover a small leak in my Orca 250 at the venturi ring which I will have to drain again and add even more teflon... again!

I do a small water change every month 25-30gallons with Reef Crystals. I add magnesium every now and then and thats it for supplements. I don't feed the corals directly. Just lots and lots of fish food and good variety. I have really fat fish.:p Their massive amounts of bi-products are what feed my corals. I use the large ARM media in my CR.

Get that tank filled and let me know when you have a build thread Nick.

Chris, I had both a Flame and Rabbit fish. The rabbit was fine until I put in Blue Zoas and then he went to town, started munching them all. The Flame had to go because he started nipping at my SPS and clam. He was fine for almost 3 years and then went bad on me.

JR, Curious as to what 'janitor' package you implemented for this tank. I can see a few snails but not that many. Any crabs or starfish?

I originally had about 100 snails and 50 crabs but the malinaris wrasse gets them. Other than the few snails and Blue legg crabs that are left, the Reeflo skimmer, tangs and I are the only janitors.:D

does the wrasse hit the crabs or snails more? i wanted a harlequin but didn't wants to replace the crew periodically. I had all blue legs once and loved it... I thought about getting 150-200 scarlets this time around + 4 tangs

He loves the snails. I have not seen him really go after the crabs yet. I have a Cleaner shrimp that has been in there for a couple of months now without any problems.

JR, That is perfect for me. I plan to make this tank mainly a tang tank with anthias and some wrasses and was wondering if I could go without any 'janitors'.

On an unrelated topic, I have a small leak on one of my returns at the slip joint. When I mean small, I mean 5-10 drops in 24 hours. Actually, I thought that joint might be a problem as I screwed up puting it in and instead of an inch I ended up only pushing it in 3/8 inch and not much twist to weld it nicely. I most defintely not take ity apart at this point unbless absolutely necessary. I have read some posts about drying it well after removing the water from the return and adding solvent aroud the seams. People have had success with this but to me it makes more sense( I have taken some fluid dynamics and have worked in manufacturing) to run the system and then shut it off. As the water drains backwards into the sump then add the solvent as the vacuum that is created should suck the solvent into the the air cavities.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

If it is only 3/8 in, I would try to pull it out clean it and re-glue it. If not try some silicone around the entire seam. If it were me I would re do the bulkhead if I could not remove the pipe.
