JR Aquatics 180 Gallon Nano Reef

UPDATE... Thanks to Mike @ Reef Specialty I am now a proud owner of a Spotted Cheek Tang. The Spotted Cheek and the Blochii didn't wook out so I had to move the Blochii to my sump till someone with a large enough tank can purchase him off me.

I also picked up a WavySea from Reef Specialty over the weekend and placed it on my tank. It is being fed by one of the returns. I may get on another for the other return.

I will get some shots of my new additions tonight.

Forgot to mention. I also picked up a frag pack from Reef Specialty over the weekend. What a DEAL. The pack really filled in my reef well. Thanks again Mike.

Man can't wait to see the pics of your WavySea and frag pack! Post em up! So what is your total circulation package/equipment now on this tank? Could you break it down and/or diagram it when you get some time? Interested to see how you like the wavysea vs. maybe vortec or tunze units or mixed?

I currently have two Vortechs, One one each side. I have 2 returns, one on a flexline and the other on a WavySea making a 120 degree span on setting 2. So far the WavySea is silent and seems to randomize the flows to the front to back more. I think I will be getting another one when I get the extra $.

I don't think the WavySea could ever take the place of a Vortech or Tunze. It just helps make the most out of the returns.

They work great if you have enough raw presure to draw the water in. I have not used the one posted above, but have seen other style penductors of friends tanks. I may be placing penductors on my outputs. The only thing is that it is not a wide distibuted flow, it is just a more powerfull direct flow only good for bouncing off your glass.

This is dead on. I have those penductors (four of them) to blast the thin space between my rockwork and the back glass to keep the water moving. They make a huge difference, but, as you say the water comes out in a very strong jet. Using a reeflo marlin to handle the increased head. About 1500 - 1800 gph comes out of the Marlin and at the cost of about four feet of head, in theory, I could boost in tank circulation by abour 4000 gph.

Reef Specialty Frag Pack

Jeremy,

That's a purdy fish! Is he about the same size as your Blochii? Cool frag pack too. I'm gonna have to ask Mike if he will ship me one.

He is just a tad smaller than the Blochii. The marks on the face and side are the war wounds from the Blochii. That is why he now resides in my sump till someone takes him off my hands.

I came across this thread and it caught my eye since I am thinking about upgrading from a 90 gallon to a 180 gallon myself. What an inspiration your build is! The rock ledges are exactly what I have been thinking about constructing. Where do you get the fiberglass rods? Did you use any epoxy or putty other than the rods?
The blue backround is very nice also. Is it painted? If so, what brand and color?
I currently run T5's and love them but I am also comparing the halide pendants. I do not see any actinics in your hood? I also love the fans on either end of your canopy. With a somewhat open top (as yours is) and the fans, do you think that heat will be a huge issue? I have no plans of buying a chiller which is one thing that has kept me from considering halides.

Sorry I have so many questions but I really like what you have done and you have inspired me! I'll be following along.
Your tank is simply beautiful!

Thanks RobynT. The fiberglass rods (driveway markers) were bought at Menards. I used Ice-gel I bought from Reef Specialty to glue the rocks and the rods together. The background was painted on useing ACE rust stop paint (navy) applied with a sponge roller. I don't think nor plan on using a chiller. At this time I have not used the fans since the temp only flexes 1-2 degrees throughout the day. The key is the reflectors. With the Lumen Bright reflectors I can mount them 15" off of the surface of the water allowing for the heat of the MH to dissipate. I also don't use actinic supplimentation since I get the perfect color of what I consider a natural reef from the Reeflux 12ks. With my lighting combo I a recieving great coral coloration and outstanding growth. I would recommend the lighting combo I use to anyone, as it is the single best thing I have ever purchased for my reef.

Here are some updated shots of my sump. From right to left: I have my Refugium w/ dsb, then the sump area (houses th sock and return of the skimmer), and finaly the return section (which I filled with live rock from my 90gal).

Hey. What are you using for light over your refugium? Did you get that Chaeto from Mike?

Looking good.

Ryan.
