Jumped the gun

Hey Guys,

I jumped the gun and pulled my pot on day 6 because I noticed a silvery eye on a lot of the eggs yesterday. None had hatched this morning, but the eggs look good still.

I have them in the larval tank with a walmart 5 inch air stone sitting upside down in it (like in Pickle's guide)

I am pretty sure tonight should have been the night, looking more silvery this morning than last night.

What are my chances of having a successful hatch? Anything I can do to improve the odds?

So long has you have good strong circulation going over those eggs to keep them healthy you should have a good hatch ;)

Thanks guys, I ended up losing this clutch. None hatched, how would you recommend placing air stones? At first I had it so bubbles aren't hitting eggs, but I have read conflicting opinions on this.

Good thing is she is ready to lay again within the next day or so, lookin chubby

I set the airstone to a nice strong boil so that eggs are obviously swaying a bit. Doesn't seem to matter if the air bubbles hit the eggs or not, just so long as there is enough water movement to keep those eggs well oxygenated.

Thanks for the input. They laid another clutch today so I will let this one hatch in tank and use the flashlight method so I know the number of days for next time.

Good idea. Mine have been hatching exactly 7 days after spawn. I've read others go 8.

Something kind of interesting for me (but unrelated), is that the spawns have gotten closer each time. Each spawn gets 1 day sooner - shortening the whole cycle by one day. I started out around 14 or 15 days, and now I'm down to 10 or 11. (My guess is 10, but I'm not for sure when this latest spawn was since I didn't plan on keeping it)

Good luck!!

How many days post spawn are you?

I've only collected 2 batches so far, but I'd say don't be afraid to ditch the cup and gently use a brine net with a small container close that you can keep dropping them into. I collected a LOT more using that method vs the first time trying to 'scoop' them.

Good luck!!! :)

Had a split hatch, first night I got around 100, second night maybe a few less.

I didn't end up getting a net and man I wish I did. I was up until 2AM this morning catching those little guys with a ladel lol

As of today they are all looking good, have the rofiers pretty dense and my air turned up enough I think (borderline turbulent but not unmanagable for them)

I have only had 3 casualties so far so I think things are OK for now!

lol! I know how you feel about the ladel technique. I ran into the problem where I filled my 5gal fry tank with water I was at it so long, and then had to pull water back out without scooping the larvae out... it was a mess.

Sounds like you're off to a good start, though! keep us updated.

Everything is going well so far, 6 dph today, no significant losses. They seem to have grown significantly over the last couple days! I am doing 30% water changes daily now and plan to introduce tdo today. Super exciting, love watching these guys grow!

excellent! It is exciting, isn't it? You doing ocellaris or percs? At 6DPH you're getting close to starting meta. That's fun... seeing the color and body shape form... and the stripes coming in is pretty exciting too...

Yea looking forward to seeing the change happen for sure. Parents are onyx Percs, here is a pic

beautiful. i love the onyx percs. So you get to wait quite a bit longer to see stripes form. Keep us posted on development. I'm curious as to the timeline for the percs. Considering (if the ocellaris project goes well), to get a pair of percs to breed.

Pulled the pot night before last and nothing hatched again, but this morning there are a lot of little eyes looking up at me! Last time I didn't have my air strong enough on the eggs, thanks guys!

I am thinking about it, some hatched last night but there were a lot of white eggs when I removed the pot this morning.

Does Chad Vossen still make those? Not available on his page anymore
