Jumpers

I've read that some of the jawfish, gobies, wrasses, etc. tend to jump out of tanks. Do you think they would still jump out of a 46" tall acrylic tank that has 2-26"x30" holes on the top? Im planning my stock list and wondering if I should make a cover for the tank.

+1 it is guaranteed that they will jump. Best thing to cover tank is a 1/4" nylon clear mesh netting. Do some searches and you should be able to find it in the DIY section.

Unless the 46" tank has only 6" of water in it, tank height has no effect on jumpers. And any fish given the right or wrong situation can jump.

My McCoskers jumped. They said a wrasse will jump eventually, it is not a matter of "if" but "when". I thought my goby jumped once because I didn't see him for a month. The other day he was chillin in my sump, but they are jumpers also.

Ill offer this for nothing more than anectodotal reference as I wouldnt recommend anyone practice what I do since it can kill your "jumpers".........but I have at least a dozen different wrasse known to jump. I have them in several different systems, and they are all wide open top eurobraced tanks, one of which while large, is only 16" deep. I havent had a jumper in years.

I have had jumpers in the past but it was back when I used to cram tons of rock in the tanks, and not have tons of open space and swimming room. For me anyway, I think the open space makes a huge difference in whether any given fish is going to want to jump or not.

just an observation

and yes, I will feel very, very stupid if in the near future I get a jumper because I just had to say it.

That was my initial thought, that with the extra height the fish wouldnt be as prone to jumping. Hope you didnt jinx yourself.

Definitely make sure it is COMPLETELY covered too. I made a lid for my jawfish home and there was maybe a 2 inch slot then was 1/2 an inch wide and he some how jumped through that. They will aim for a spot and hit it with ridiculously accuracy. Definitely make sure there are not ANY openings.

make sure you get something with small holes also a flasher wrasse for instance can fit througha 1/2 hole easily-- i think maximum 1/4 by 1/4 square nothing bigger

I had a mower bleny that hoped out of my tank and into the back of my BIOCUBE filter. I was trying to find the thing then i took a look in the back and sure enough there it was. I even secured the hell out of the back of it. The fish will find a way
