Jumpers?

I'm heading out today to pick up a few anthias and dottybacks but I have recently ditched the hood that came with my tank and now have a suspended lighting unit and the tank is now open.

I know all fish can jump but are anthias and dottybacks know for it or are they generally well behaved?

You have to have some kind of lid. I learned this the hard way about a week ago. My Niger was in my sump wich sits right behind my tank. Thank god he was ok. Any fish will eventually try n jump out. A year ago I lost a diamond goby that lives on the bottom of the sand. I would of thought it would of been the last to jump out.

I've lost a couple anthias to jumping. I would make a mesh screen top you can put on the tank for the first week or so, especially at night. Still might lose them after that though.

Anthias are known jumpers +1 on netting ot fish mesh. They will scare easy at first and jump - be smart and spent 20$ on fish mesh.

Thanks for the advice guys, they didn't have any anthias in stock today :( got a really nice pyjama wrasse though, will get some mesh screening from eBay this week.

Sorry to thread jack but what about everyone with rimless tanks? Putting a mesh net on kills the look and defeats the purpose of those beautiful rimless tanks! In ready for an upgrade and want rimless, but can't do the ugly net!

Solution is very simple. The tank won't have the mesh top on when you are around to save the fish from drying up. In other words, only when you are close to the tank. A mesh lid will be on the tank at all other times. Won't kill the look since it won't matter when you aren't around.

No it does not have to kill the look. I have posted on other rimless tank threads. You just make sure you let it stay inside the top or the rim. I would be minus my favorite couple of fish without my mesh top.

So your saying only have the lid on when I'm away? I wouldn't want to take the lid off every day, that'd get old.

I thought about having the lid fitted inside the glass below the lip. I'll have to search some images.

My lid is only off for maintenance and feeding. Even in that short interval, I have had a fish jump (multiple times with the same fish). Fortunately I was right there and put the escapee back in the tank. That being said I have kept a Purple Tilefish and a Bluespot Jawfish for a year. Without a lid both would be dead.

Custom top for my Elos 120XL
It looks great, and it works perfectly!!!

definitely screen top. I have deer mesh on mine. its a little wider than regular screen so it dosent mess with the par from the lights, but is enough to deter any jumping.
