started my 10g nano reef, still cycling...but looking ahead to what ill have in it.
it will be either a softy or lps dominated tank wth porcelyn crabs, a pompom crab, snails, hermits, and a skunk cleaner... so ideas for a small fish or two would be appreciated.

2 x Gobiodon histrio and one Chrysipreta parasema, maybe Stenogobiops yasha. Yasha is a great nano fish! It's so shy that it can't really be kept in a tank with bigger fishes if you wish to see it...

not a good idea, I recommend an assessor.

HA! Really?

Actually it really is a good idea. Knowning Shovel, he will get a smasher, either a wennie or a smithii. Smasher's are very unlikely to go after fish. The damsel has a good shot at staying alive, due to its speed, and probably won't bother the mantis. If any problems do arise, it will mostly likely be the $3 damsel that gets the short straw.

Personally, I'd never keep an assessor in a 10g tank. Pairs are much more interesting, and need their space.

Edit; If you are recommending an assessor to go with the mantis, then that is even more laughable. A $100 fish that likes to hide in rocks, in with a powerful, rock dwelling predator...

I have a neogondylactys wennerae in a 10 gal for a little over a year now. He's been living with a 4 stripe damsel. My blue devil just disappeared one night some months ago (insert stupid face) that fish likes sleeping with the mantis for some reason.

He's super easy to take care of. He doesn't even require live food all the time. I give him a piece of shrimp or squid, he grabs mysis when I feed the damsel; I occasionally throw him a snail or some hermits and he's content. Actually, he decimated 5 snails in a few days but he's lets 1 hermit survive the past year and eaten all the others.

I recently deepened the sand bed to about 4 inches because I was tired of hearing him beat on the grate but, it seems that today he finally made it down to the grate again ::click:: click::

how active is your wennie?

When I first got him he was spazzing and swimming all over, then calmed down and hid for about 2 weeks. I think he's molted twice since I had him but I'm only confident I found the exoskeleton once and assume he ate it the 2nd go around.

I'd say he's pretty active. He's constantly excavating his burrow and has at least 3 entrances around the tank. He's gotten more active as time went by. I find him peaking his head out all the time or wandering around looking for big pebbles to cover old entryways and make new ones. Sometimes he catches me watching him and we stare at each other for a minute he blinks his funny vertical blink and summersaults over back to work.

When I do feed chunks of squid, I use chopsticks and let him work for it for a minute ::tick tick tick:: I let him pop my finger once out of curiosity; it wasn't that bad but I won't push my luck

lol he is, trust me. Meus just has a speacial hate for clownfish, and transversly, people WITH clownfish... Its not really YOU persay, but rather the fact you reccomended clown fish. :b (aka he hates clown fish and hes joking around so dont take it too hard... but i do agree with meus on the assessor part... a bit too small and chancing for a 100$ fish...)

What kind of smaller clowns are you talking about? I forgot im making my own sump so i can make a fuge compartment for a wennie there underneath the peacock tank!

also while id be all go on the pygmy wrasse... i am going to be doing smaller inverts (pom pom crabs, possibly sexy shrimp) which i believe wrasse's alike tend to pick on.

Actually, I'm a very nice person. Just as Shovelman here :wavehand:.
You seem like an arrogant person, maybe nice to meet, but not to go bowling with.

Possum wrasse and smaller species of clownfish are peaceful, beautiful, and interesting fish.

I agree with the possum wrasse, and I know Shovel wants one. Although, I also know that unless his LFS gets one in he's not paying for one online.

About the clownfish, that is a lie. All clownfish are territorial. The only two species that could be classified as "small", they are Percular and Occelaris. Both these species can be kept in a 10g tank. When small they are peaceful, but when the difference between genders becomes apparent(i.e. one gets bigger), both clowns can turn extremely territorial. When hosting an anemone they tend to become territorial faster. Even though a 10g tank is too small for a hosting anemone, even a small amount of territoriality can be a death sentence the other fish. Clownfish are damsels, damsels have a bad reputation for being territorial, because they are. Clownfish are just the same as any other damsel, being territorial, and ill-tempered. Not only that, everyone has a clownfish. Its not very interesting to be cliche.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally think inimicus are more beautiful than any species of clownfish.

Shovel,
I'd say go with the mantis. If you'd want a cheap fish, flame firefish are cheap, and should a possum become available later, won't bully it to death.

Its not that I hate people with clownfish, its that I find it cliche that everyone recommends one. Personally I want my tanks to be unique. I don't want my tank to be exactly like anyone else's, because where is the fun in that? Then when I see 80% of tanks with a pair of clownfish in them, it detracts from any other "coolness" that that tank might have. To me, putting a clownfish in a tank, would be like everyone putting the same frag of xenia in their tank. In some cases it looks good, put it would be far out of place, and possibly detrimental, in an sps only. Again, the only smaller clowns are Occelaris and Percular, and both species look similar enough to be mistaken for each other.

I was kidding, but good point none the less

i would also definitely recommend a mantis, ive had multiple (Wennerae, Bredini, and a Smithii) and all have been incredibly fun, active, and very interactive. working on getting the reef aspect of the tank up to par now!
