just can't win for losing...

wouldn't you know we're finally makin some headway getting some nice pieces to put in the tank and we come home to find our white lights not on...

we tried swapping one of the blues into the whites and no go there...the blue bulb didn't work in the white socket and the white didn't work in the blue...

thoughts??

it's a Nova Extreme 4x54w 48"
 
With all bulbs in the blue won't fire anywhere and the white won't fire in the blue???

I'm not following the whole situation

oh ya, that's the whole situation. the white fixture must've blown the white bulbs as well as some part of the white fixture...

we have 2 blues working in their respective places and no white bulbs working anywhere

the lights went off with the timer and after thinkin about it, neither of us remember the light coming on this morning...
 
That stinks... but a few days with lights out won't hurt anything. Some people actually recommend doing it every few months. I personally don't do it, but if you keep SPS you should be able to go 2 or 3 days without any problems... probably a little longer with softies.

Could be something wrong with the fixture/ballast. Current units are known to have more issues than most. I would give their customer service a call.

Good luck, hopefully you can get it fixed quickly.
 
I think I'd try customer service first. And then maybe search the DIY threads for what ballast to use if you need to replace it.

I contacted Elmers and they are going to help me out tomorrow, hopefully. I tried switching the bulbs around and it is definitely something with the ballast or wiring cause only one set of lights fire at any given time and two never light. It's a shame for something that is only 28 days old.

Now my question is, what do i replace it with? What brand? I wouldn't mind maybe going with the six bulb one. Is 6 T5's worth the price difference? Thanks for the words of wisdom
 
I just got a TEK 8 bulb t5 setup and i will tell you on a 75 you cant go wrong with it.enough light for any life you would want to keep. a 6 bulb would make diffrence over the 4 bulb and IMO worth the money. or go to aqua world and buy the same light i got i think they had them for 499.00 not sure if that was it you would have to check
 
I made my own set up I got icecap reflectors, endcaps and bulbs from reefgeek I got 4 sylvania t5HO ballasts off ebay for less than $40 shipped and some heavy grade coated wire from homedepot, wood for hood was all stuff i had laying around, paint was from walmart. I used to run six bulbs and have less than $300 in it. Right now I plan on running 4 to ward off heat but I think I will end up back at 6. It's not quite as fancy as the units and I need to redo the hood for convenience but it gets the light down in there no problem.
 
well, Elmer's was kind enough to replace the fixture with a different brand completely. i'm still insanely confused as to what happened but it seemed to be enough to tick off the LTA we have...he started a small chemical warfare in his move and our ammonia bumped up to .25 - SCARY!!

did a 20% WC and seems to be well now. HOPEFULLY, the only victim of this little disaster was one of our orange rics we snagged from Wet Pets...2 of the other rics aren't looking well but i believe they'll come around.

we're REALLY beginning to think its us...thank god we don't have children!!!
 
a Sundial T5HO fixture. boyfriend went up this morning and the owner recommended it. i've never heard of it but perhaps that's the route we need to take..so terribly frustrated with this hobby as of late...
 
Kerriann - sorry to hear that.

your light was under warranty though so no issues there (pretty sure you have a year warranty on that light) - and it was nice of Elmers to let you replace it with something different. Sundial is also made by current but I believe it is a step up from the Nova Extreme model you had. I would have recommended if they allowed you to try and pay the difference to upgrade to the 6 bulb Nova Extreme Pro. I have been very pleased with my Extreme Pro - and with the 6 bulbs, it is more than enough to allow me to keep anything I want. The SPS frags I picked up over the last 2 months are really thriving. But the Sundial should serve you well - the only issue may be down the road if you get into SPS. Then you may just need to be careful with placement, etc

ya, with our current lifestyles i don't think SPS is something we can manage for awhile down the road anyways. our nem is still a little ticked and he's been pulled in all day - wish i knew what set him off! his little stunt cost me ALL of my orange ricordeas and nothing else. guess it's true, there really is no "good deal"...got those rics much too cheap...
