Just curious as to what this is

I put a nuisance fish up for rehoming on craigslist and I mentioned that if you had anything to trade that would be cool.

I really wanted the fish gone so I took some powerheads and this thing in trade. Not sure what exact type of coral it is and thought maybe someone could help me. I had no idea how to tell if its alive or dead or anything. New to coral since I kept puffers.

It is dark purpleish in color.

Yes he called it a leather coral but when I googled that I didnt see anything that looked like it so I wanted a specific name.
Looks like it shouldnt be too hard to keep?
My tank can provide up to 4 watts of lighting per gallon if I turn it up but normally I just have it 2 watts per gallon. Would I need to turn it up or no?

Also, not sure how huge of a deal this is with coral but how do I tell if it has died?
It is fairly large and I feel like if it started to rot it could definitely destroy the water quality of the tank.

it could definately destroy the water quality as anything that is dying in a closed system would, but how big is your tank?
