i just got a nano cube last week. 24g jbj. it is set up and running now with live rock and live sand. it seems that alot of people modify their nano cubes. what is the best advice for changing the filter media? also wondering if there is a good place to put a skimmer on this nano cube? thanks for the help guys.

I have the same tank.

In mine I have the back chambers setup like:

Chamber 1 - Chemi-pure on the bottom, Filter Floss above that, phosban in a media bag above that.

Chamber 2 - Purigen

Chamber 3 - MaxiJet 1200

A skimmer is really overkill on a tank like this. I do weekly 5 gallon waterchanges, does just a good of a job.

I agree. My 20cube is the first without a skimmer and though I have one ready to go in if needed it seems to be doing pretty good the 2+months it has been running. I also am running a carbon/phos remover and it seems to work for this size nano.

Thanks. i cycled my LS and LR 6-8 weeks before I added any livestock. If you just set up the tank there is nothing wrong with algae and it might not be good to try and get rid of it untill you are finished cycling, at which point it should clear on its own.
You really should cycle the tank 4-6 weeks at the least before adding any livestock. If you don't you will be fighting a loosing battle from now on with undesirable algae. Don't do any water changes during this time either no matter how tempting.
It is difficult to cycle a new reef for that long with no critters in it, but in the long run you will be rewarded with a healthy system. There are no exceptions when it comes to closed reef systems.
