Just got my first sps, acclimating proceedure?

I usually take them out of the bag and let them slime up a few mintues. This creates a natural protective coat when you put it in the tank. I would say they are different then other corals in this regards. This is what happens on low tide when some of the reef flats are exposed.

First I would like to know what kind of lighting and what kind of sps you have. Then I would say whether or not acclimating is needed. It is not a water acclimation, although I would still float but that's me, it is a light acclimation. You need to know if it is wild or aquacultured and what kind of lighting it is used to and then use that info to determine what kind of screening you should use.

I'd say you'd be fine anywhere in the tank with that piece. I had mine at the bottom of the tank (~20" from the top) then moved it up to about 6" from the top of the tank all under 400 watt Iwasakis with out any problems.
