Just got my Lion

I had purchased this from saltwaterfish.com and was told its an antennata. Its still a juvenile so I'm not sure if its fins should have that long thing sharp fin look yet or is this another type of lionfish? Also... I fed it ghost shrimp which it devours instantly, but I have a hard time feeding it krill. Any ideas would be nice... I've done alot of research, but anymore info would be helpful.

Looks like antennata to me, judging by the first pic, the blue circles in his fins. Either way, very nice looking. Good luck on getting him to eat prepared foods.

the way i got my volitan to eat when i had him was to first buy some feeder goldfish, take them by the tail and put them on the surface of the water for the lion to see. once he sees this, he will come to the top of the tank and grab it. keep feeding like this for a couple days. Then once he knows you are the one who feeds him, he will always come to the top of the tank looking for food (kind of like a puppy lol). Now go out and buy some silversides from your LFS and do the same thing (take by tail and dangle on the surface of the water) keep changing foods around and all you have to do at this time is drop the food into the water. there you go. VIOLA!!! A weened lionfish

I would advise against feeding your lion FW feeder fish. Everything that I have read has suggested that this is not a good idea and bad for your fish's health. I recently purchased a dwarf fuzzy lionfish and initially gave it ghost shrimp. I had to do this for a week. Then I starved him for about a week. After starving him he was happy to take silversides and krill. I now feed him 2-3 times a week. Make sure to feed krill in moderation. Good luck. A very nice looking fish.

Its a beautiful lionfish
but Sorry-- its misidentified.

Its NOT P Antennata, its most likely a Dendrochirus zebra ("Zebra lion") a dwarf species.

Please consider using the lionfish info sheet (linked above) and compare the telling features. PEC rays, eye spots, striping, etc

If you look at the Lion Infosheet photos you'll see that the Pec rays on a P antennata are membranous to less than 1/2 way, w/ huge eyespots

The reason i stated that he needed to start with FW goldfish is to ween him off of them. You are absolutely right though. A goldfish and a sliverside (dead saltwater minnow like thing lol) look almost the same from the lionfishes point of view. so once you get him eating frozen silversides it will be easy to get him to eat krill, shrimp/prawn, scallops etc. from the top of the tank.

give it some time i bought the same one from saltwaterfish.com and at first he ate every fish in my tank that would fit in his mouth, after a couple of weeks he started eating mysis , and then i wouldnt feed him for a couple of days since he refused to eat, after a while he had no choice but to start eating krill. you might have to move it around a bit in the water they like live food , so make it seem as its moving and hell start eating.

So it is a dawrf zebra right? Also I understood lionfishfinatic didnt mean feed it goldfish LOL. Thats why I was going to try the silversides.
