Just hatched artemia & 12 g Nanocube?

Angel*Fish

cats and large squashes
Hi - I'm a newbie to seahorses...my LFS has a bunch of itty bitty dwarf seahorses - about 1 inch

I have an empty 12 g nanocube
I have a constant supply of live just hatched baby brine

Question-

If I put a sponge over the Nano intake would the tank work for these babies?

Is live artemia nauplii a food they could catch?

Also some of them are white...are those probably the whitei ones that should be in cooler water?

Depending upon your flow rate, you may have to reduce it. That should be easy enough by swapping out pumps. Heat is another issue. Long term seahorses do better at cooler temps. If your nano is like many others it probably exceeds 80 degrees. I like to keep the dwarfs at 77 degrees or less.
12 gallons is a little large for a couple of dwarfs. If you plan on putting a couple of dozen in, size wise, it should be fine for the feeding density. If you plan on putting only a couple in, I would go with a smaller tank.

and just cause they are white, doesn't mean that they are a certain species: you should find out what species they are BEFORE you get them.

I know my questions sound stupid :D I didn't have time to ask about them at the LFS & thought if you guys said "all white seahorses are whitei" then I'd know i didn't have to make the trip back there to ask

DanU - Thanks for the info & help :) - I guess what I need to do is set up that tank & see what the temp is going to be - bet you're right though, the lights will probably heat it up to 80 - it is the one with only one bulb though...

Sounds like you're saying they would eat the BBS? I don't know how long those guys can live in normal seawater before they die as I've never had a situation where they didn't get eaten up in an hour or 2 - the LFS had about 8 teeny seahorses - I don't think i could afford 12, but would that many outgrow the tank?

I don't know about changing out the pump...It's one of those nano cubes with the pump, lights & biowheel in the hood. I wonder if the flow could be baffled somehow. Maybe not... I had a jelly fish years ago and the flow had to be very very light, actually I siphoned the water from my main tank thru airline as a "pump". Is that the kind of slow flow we're talking about?

Hi Marie, more likely than not they are just regular dwarf seahorses. They can be a variety of colors.... dark brown, tan, rust, white, cream, etc etc etc.

Whitei are a "large" specie of seahorse. They aren't named Whitei because of their color, however, as they are not white.

Hope that helps a bit!

That clarified things tremendously! Thank you. :)

I still have this 12 g Nano cube though... Can anybody tell me whether I can make it work for dwarf angels? It is the flow situation I'm most concerned with.

I'm pretty sure that dwarf angels are a nono in that size tank,.,

If I had a 12 gallon sitting around, I'd have either a couple of leaffish, or a mantis!!!!

what I wouldn't do for either of them!

i think since you said it has a bio-wheel in it.. that it isnt a nanocube.. and that its an Eclipse 12g. ..... n-e way.. do a www.google.com images search for both the 12g. Nanocube and the 12g. Eclipse.. then ull know for sure which u have....

Oh sorry, its a Nano cube - I didn't really look at it & it's in my storage bldg. right now. I should have been more careful because I accidentally bought the one w/only one light - it was a BD gift for my daughter & who actually wanted to keep a peacock mantis in it- I know I sound like the "thoughtless reefer" buying Nano cubes without knowing much about them & posting in the seahorse forum with uneducated questions

Here's the link if anybody wants it - the 12g Nano cube w/1 light

Good news is it comes with a fan :D
Anyway sorry for the confusion

Swanwillow - a no-no for what reason?

so, WHERE is the mantis??? comeon now!!!!

I've SOO wanted a peacock, just never had the funds or the tank at the right time for one.

We never bought one - she decided she didn't have time...

I used to have a little Carribean mantis that came in on some LR
He was so cute. He had his little cave with a back door & a front door that he would seal up at night.

Smart little thing too. Before I caught him I "rented" a huma trigger to catch him. It was so hilarious to see the huma trying to get him & the mantis outwitting him. The huma would still think he was in a certain rock but the mantis would already be hiding on another rock behind the trigger. He'd peek around the rock & watch the huma trying to get him in the wrong rock. Very entertaining.

He wasn't as interesting in a tank of his own so I gave him away.
