I have a 55 that is about a 1/3 full of crushed coral. This is going to be used in my refugium. The balance of the tank is full of live rock. I have a sump and skimmer with a power head and a heater on the tank presently. I have 0 ammonia and nitrite.

My real question is, this is for a larger system that I will be putting together in the near future. What do I need to do to keep the rock alive and well? There are some of the little stars and a couple of snails in there now. Should I add something?

Lights, flow and a little food I think to keep the food pyramid working. Gotta keep giving life in tank fuel or it will starve. If this is going to be your refugium you can see how many pods you can get going in there now any future dragonets will love you for it.

The rock only needs to be keep covered in water and it will be fine for a long time. Some reports up to a year. To keep the livestock, you need light, heater, flow and a little food. Basically keep the tank parameters like you would you DT.
