My 5" Ultra Maxima is no longer with me as of this morning. I got it locally 2 weeks ago and thought all was well. The other clam I bought at the same time is still doing great. Darnit, I lost another clam; two total thus far. This clam was by far my favorite. The stupid cleaner shrimp was picking at the clam which made me notice it in the first place. :mad2:

The clams was doing fine yesterday and today, bam gone. I immediately checked my parameters and everything was in check. BTW, the clam was attached to a rock. No more clams for me for the time being.

pH = 8.2
Nitrate = 0ppm
Calcium = 420ppm
Alk = 11.2dKH

What gives??? :confused: :( :mad2:

Yep, I did and found nothing. What the heck is happening? Can a clams be doing great one day and the next day just die? That's what puzzles me. The clam showed no signs of it's death nearing...

could have been diseased when you brought it in.... tough to say though. Best of luck, and sorry for your loss.

Sounds like the last clam disease.

I dont know the cause, but it seems that the wild clams are the carriers and then it can infect other clams.

It seems like the Maximas are the only ones that get it.

In aquariums with Maximas, Squomosas Derasas and Crocea it affected only the Maximas.

the last clam disease affected both maxima's and crocea's in my tank. i didn't have any squamosa's or derasa's so i can't comment on them.

After losing two clams, I picked decided to order the book "Giant Clams". It has taught me so much and it's well worth the $40. Wish I would have at least picked up the book earlier so I possibly could have saved one clam. Oh well...

I still have 3 clams to be proud of. :)

Hi Emperator,

My experience is with over 100+ maxima clams.

My friend bought them from who's consider to be the biggest importer of clams and corals in america.

He sold them in his shop, we checked and found out that none of those clams survived, few died in the shop and all the rest died in client's tank, sometimes taking rest of the maxima ONLY, with them.
All deaths were sudden, 12-48hrs gap from first signs.

In the same shipment there were Derasas and Croceas, that remained unharmed till now.

In the same system and in people who bought these maximas tanks, there were Squomosas that remained unharmed as well.

That must have been the case.

I checked and made many phone calls.

Not even one Crocea died there, all were Maxima,
All were from that particular shipment, and in some cases, they transmitted the disease or virus or whatever it was to other Maximas in the tank.

In cases of transmission, always the clam from that particular shipment dies first, and after few days to a couple of weeks the symptoms were shown on a once, healthy maxima.
As I mentioned, within 12-48hrs, the Maxima goes to Clam Heaven.

BTW,Fresh water dips wont help.

I posted in another thred but am losing my second Crocea in a row. The first was not dog well when I got it, it was an attempted rescue. The second one has been doing wonderfully for 1.5 months now. Suddenly today I could tell it was heading in the same direction as the last. Mantle receding inward, syphone gaping. Called LFS and they suggested water change and to try direct feeding but I am afraid it may be for naught! Water parameters were all good and the tank has been doing exeptionally well even spawning a brain coral polyp and mushrooms multiplying. It did just develop a bit of red slime but nowhere near the Clam. Any thoughts?
