Hi Everyone,

Hope all is well with everyone and their tanks. I have a problem that recently came up. Quick chain of events.

Purchased 02 Snowflake Clowns. - Original fishes.
Weeks Later

Purchased 01 Purple FireFish - Died within a 1 hour of adaption. Immediately taken out and exchanged.

Purchased/Exchanged for Flame Angel.
Weeks Later
Died. Would not eat. Possible Ich (but forum considered otherwise)

Week later

02 Clowns - Original fish. They have a def sign of ICH.

I am furious the **** off as anyone would.

Current status: Away from the sandbed. Still eating. Swimming. A bit breathing heavy. Fed them today, and ate well.

Method: Researched that I can use garlic and Vitamin C solutions mixed with frozen Brine and feed the fish.

Questions:

1) Can this method be used in a display reef tank?

2) Garlic and Vitamin solutions - any specific type? where to buy? I mean, I am thinking actual garlic and oranges (forgive me if I am wrong lol)

3) Eating habits - Should I feed everyday, but smaller meals? Keep appetite up?

No QT or hospital tank.. Thank you everyone

#1 yes, you can use those in a reef

#2 Selcon and your Garlic of choice

#3 It's a good idea to feed heavier if your fish have an ailment to ensure they are getting the proper amount of nutrition, however... given the targeted nitrate levels for a reef, be careful.

If I were you, forget what you asked and what has been said above.

Your not fully stocked. If you want more than just those clownfish do what you can to eradicate the disease (10 week fallow period). I'm one of the more open minded people on here when it comes to ich. I tend to be more of an "ich manager". But, at your point in the hobby it just doesn't make sense to stock more fish and expose them. It's best to get them (and your display) cured and do the needed steps to prevent getting ich in your display via future purchases.

^ Excellent feedback! Thank you very much! I have a reactor coming in along with carbon and GFO.. Should be in Friday.. I just hope my fish make it through. But I will feed them daily now.. Smaller amounts..

Truly tragic..

Garlic & vitamins will do nothing to cure ich. You cannot cure ich in a reef tank. This forum has a constant stream of folks who have lost their fish to ich while trying to manage it. If you don't cure this stuff once and for all; this hobby will almost certainly end in a big disappointment. You're not using a QT with new fish now, of course you have ich. It will not leave your DT as long as there are fish in it. The carbon won't help either. Its ich or a HT/QT. Any decent source will tell you the same thing.

agree with the above. leave the display tank fishless and treat fish in a hospital tank. once ick is out of your display, qt all new purchases.

Well forum.. Thank you for all the feedback..

As of this morning, my last 02 fish (clowns) have died.. Total of 4 fishes died in a matter of 1 week. Sad morning to wake up too.

Now the tank only has a shrimp and corals. Gonna be fishless now.. QT will be setup within the 60 days probation period..

Thanks again. Happy 4th..

60 day QT isnt enough time. I use 77 days fallow.

Taking fallow time to cycle a QT is a great idea. Also prepare for a 15 day tank transfer prior to 4 weeks quarantine and you shouldn't ever experience ick again.

Good luck

I am soooo sorry for your loss. It makes me want to cry. I am curing my fish and DT of ich right now and can't imagine how sad you must be for losing your clowns.

Understandable.. And it makes sense. I am not in a hurry for fish now. I am truly upset.. One fish that caused all this (educational guess based on historical events).

I will wait it out even more. 90 days. Whatever it takes. This time now, my new passion will be coral development and placement. I already have a frag tank setup with my brother and now I am going to be designing the tank into newer stages. With a loss, there is always more opportunity..

Question,

Also prepare for a 15 day tank transfer prior to 4 weeks quarantine and you shouldn't ever experience ick again.

What do u mean by this? As in when I get new fish when Fallow period is over?

Thanks..

Truly a sad day.. Cant stop thinking about all the fish. Doing all well jew a few days ago....

But I hope your fish survive and disease goes away.

Good luck..

Back on post #4 of this thread, I attached a link to a thread where a OP is having the same issues as you are having. In his thread, I described my protocol for doing the tank transfer method, as well as cost of material to do so.

There are also "stickys" describing variations of this method at the top of this thread that are very informative on the why this method works at ick removal.

I to have had a recent outbreak of ick and it left me scrambling to set up for eradication. Not the best time to prepare for such an event.

I've been a little luckier than you as I haven't lost a fish, and I'm happy to say that while the TTM (tank transfer method) may seem like a stress inducer, exactly the opposite has proven out, my fish seem happy, and my coral beauty wasn't taking prepared foods in my DT, but now is. Clowns are happy to see me when I pop the lid off and neither the CB or yellow tang fight anymore.

I'm just hoping my QT can get cycled before the TTM stage is complete.

Oh, one more thing, my CB hasn't displayed a ick cyst since the second transfer.

I really have faith in this system, it just flat WORKS.

Good luck in the future.
