Just ordered my first sps

Bent

I got nothin'
Other than a monticap this will be my first sps. Got a 5" Fiji birds nest from divers den.

Any words of wisdom?

Hello! I had a couple of Montipora, Acropora and the other ones taht grow like a weird mass of something lol
It was years ago so I don't remember much... But they did seem much more happy when I buy a complete set of the chemicals that was used back then by Kent.

I always used calcium and foods, but they did seem to improve with all the other bottles lol

Good luck and hope someone pro answer soon!

Do you not have any local reefers that you can reach out to? Typically buying online has expensive frag and shipping costs. Testing SPS for your tank would be good to get small cheap frags from locals or getting with your LFS for a small piece to try out

I don't know the first person with a saltwater tank around here...

Green or pink?
Birds nest are pretty much bullet proof.
Keep your numbers decent (around ca 430, kh 8.4, mg 1350) and have a capable light and you should have no problems.
In my previous tank I had one at the top, current tank it's mid level.
They are quite forgiving.
On the flip side, watch out for rtn.

Its pink, at least the pics are pink.

I'm planning on putting it at the top of the rock work.

What is rtn?

What kind of lighting do you have. For some reason I have a problem with birdsnests in my tank even though my montis and acros grow like crazy. From what I've seen the like high flow and "low/medium" light assuming you have a SPS capable fixture.

Two 16" reef breeders.

rapid tissue necrosis. other is stn, slow tissue necrosis. Have battled the STN before and stopped it with alk above 8. Seems to be a cause when the alk is lower, around 7. Have had a birdsnest for a while now. Easy, I dont really feed. the less you mess with it the better. And if you happen to break a little piece during a water change, just glue it to another rock. will grow from even the smallest piece.

You and I must be like-minded...This was going to be my next purchase, too!

Once again, I think that I'll let you be the Guinea Pig. ;)

Thanks buddy! Lol

Hopefully it goes well, my Kali reactor is keeping my all at about 8.5-9 and Ca in the high 400s to low 500s.

I was between a clam and this. We will see what happens.

How's your maxima doing btw?

Oh do you guys suggest superglue or the kneadable epoxy route? Where on the coral can I put the glue?

Sweet, wait till you buy and grow out your first acro. Then you will be hooked. Congrats none the less.

Going to try to work up to some acro.

I really want some Christmas tree worms in some of that coral they grow in and try my hand at that eventually.

lol, my wife has her own tank and is obsessed with all kinds of tube worms and owns them all. She just recently got a larger rock with the Christmas tree worms, and it's a called a porties coral which they are found in.

Great additions!

They're pretty tough corals. I really messed up some dosing that nuked a few SPS frags. Birdsnest and Montis did just fine.

That's the one. I heard the porties coral is challenging.

Another sea Apple is in my list of eventuals too.

It's porites the Christmas tree worms live in, at least locally.

I use epoxy with superglue gel on either side. With a birdsnest, if you can mount it using the plug it comes on it's better. Birdsnest tends to break easily when you're trying to mount it.

The Maxima's doing well itself, but one side of its shell (in a low-flow area) has grown some turf looking algae on it. It's fine, but annoying.

And in regards to superglue gel or epoxy putty, if you can get away with just using the gel, I would go that route. If done properly, that epoxy/superglue sandwich works @#$%! good! If you ever want a change up, it's a real booger to break it loose from your rock.

ALSO though, remember to start that little beauty down on your sand for a while to get used to your lighting. I bleached out some Monti caps baaad because I didn't think to acclimate them to my increased lighting. In the wise words of Homer Simpson, "D'oh!" :headwally:
