Just put in 175w HM. Is there a break in period?

Is there a break in period for MH lights? I have existing 2x96W PC's for my 55g. Its a 36x15x20 tank so it doesnt have a really big hood. I added a 175w MH light. Can I just turn it on for 8-10 hours a day or should I gradualy turn the time up weekly?

MH bulbs typically need a week or two to burn in to achieve their true color.
As far as acclimating your tank to the more intense light, you can slowly ramp up to your full photo period, BUT you must also shade your tank with layers of screen. Then gradually remove a layer of screen every couple of days. Hope that makes sense.
