Just set up my aquarium again

Okay, so long story short, I had a reef aquarium for a while, but a case of ich wiped out my tank. I gave up for a year, and am just getting back into it. I have my tank set back up, and I just got a new fish (false perc) and one coral frag.

I have my fish in QT, and placed my frag in the display. I'm wondering, what are the chances of introducing ich and other contaminants into my tank by having placed the frag in there? I don't want to QT my false perc just to put him in the tank and him get what I tried to avoid. My question is, would it be beneficial to leave my fish in the QT for an extended period of time, and to not have any fish (just coral) in the display, (leaving it fallow as far as fish are concerned), and to do this for 5 or 6 weeks to let the parasites life cycle go go around.

So, in short, how likely is that to happen, would it be a good idea to go fallow, and if so, for how long?

Just worried about doing this right after my last tank got wiped out.

Did you use any of the rock or substrate from the old tank?

After everything died I dumped the tank in the back yard. The rocks were out there for about a year. I cooked the rock, and started from scratch with live sand, and cycled for a few months.

No ich from the previous infection would still be in the tank as a result.

I'm just worried that coral frags could be a source of contamination.

Sure they can. Consider dipping your corals or frags in CoralFx

I would just qt your fish and feed them healthy food while in the qt. then add them to your tank

Thanks capn hylinur. I actually did dip my coral in a coral dip called "revive coral cleaner" by two little fishies. I don't know if that is the equivalant, but the coral was stuck to an abandoned snail shell. Do you think that that would have killed anything on it and in it?

Probably and most likely

I add a uv sterilizer to systems that I am stocking or restocking. Parasites like ich are water born when they leave the host and return to it.over time Uv can reduce the population of ich considerably so it does not have a great impact on fish as it otherwise(this is my own experience with it..others will surely disagree )

That helps a lot! Thanks again!
