Just showed up one day (pic)

I've had my tank up and running for four years now. I haven't added any rock within the last two and a half years. It has been about the same for adding corals. The only thing I've added is a few snails and crabs now and again. About three months ago, I noticed this

Anyone know what this is and why it would suddenly show up after all these years?

I first noticed it about four months ago and it hasn't moved or grown in that amount of time. Does that sound right for a majano?

There are things called Tube Anenomes. I know nothing about them, but trying looking that up and see if it looks like it

I'm not sold on the majano id. Looks almost like a solitary coral polyp. What corals to you have in the tank?

If it was me, I'd wait and watch it, it might be something cool.

I have tons of zoos, hammer, frogspawn, slimer acro, birdsnest, brains, galaxy, and a few mushrooms. Whatever this is has decided to show up in the back (tank viewable from four sides), away from everything but a few orange zoos.

never seen a majano flourecse under actinics....... I dont know weather majano's need light to grow, If they dont then thats not a majano anemene.

o.k. so I was almost wrong:

looks like little version of this....

Hi, I attached a picture and have been going around and around with a few people about what exactly these little guys are called I have been calling them Tulip Anemone's and some people have been calling them Aiptasia Anemone's......lol Now I know the difference and would never give away the dreaded ones on purpose, but have I been doing that by mistake?
----this is a handsome Anemonia (so called Majano cf. species). They can be a plague just as easily as Aiptasia. For those with good water quality though (good nutrient export, control of particulates at large, etc) they present no problem and may be enjoyed. I find them to be very attractive----
These guys in the picture split pretty easy when fed directly and are rather beautiful especially when you have a small cluster of them growing in the same area they do not seem to get much larger than a quarter. What do you think they are? Thank You for your time,
----best regards, Anthony----

when i first started i purchased a beautiful 'showpiece'
had 2 matching ricordias on a great looking piece of liverock - the combo was a real 'showpiece'

when i purchased it there was a lil thing attached to rock
the STORE OWNER pointed out that it was a cute lil anenome that came w/ the rock (like i was getting a deal or something extra thrown in on the piece)

it lived on that rock for months
until i learned it was a pest like aiptasia - but didnt realize the extent of the threat - tried to cut it off thinking the peppermints would finish it off (like they had all the aiptaisia)

long story short
they began spreading once it was threatened... and funny thing was that once already familiar w/ the extent of the threat... we had what we thought was a small patch of zoanthids growing on a piece of rock - that ended up being majanos - couldnt quite distinguish until we moved some LR around from above it.

i searched all over the tank
(luckily the back of tank wasnt painted and i had enough room to look around behind all the over 200# of LR)... and picked out about 40# of LR.

after doing a search here on RC
and realizing how serious these majanos can turn into plague proportions in the tank - then i decided to bleach the LR and not take a chance on any of it being contaminated - originally i used a hammer and chisel to completely remove the majanos that i could 'see' which was about 4-5

when doing a search
one of the main threads shows pics of veteran reefers who have had to completely break down their systems bec of these pests - plus the pics show a complete takeover in the system - all over everything including the side of the glass on the tanks

= why i sterilized the rocks the way i did - too much money into this system/corals (((((time))))) to go risking something like that happening - would be very disheartening - much worse then sterilizing 40# LR which can become live again over time.

point is - if its not something i am familiar w/ and perhaps if it even resembles these majanos or something close - then i would get rid of it based on how much i value the overall system - not worth risking!

if you do remove it be very careful
might try to completely remove rock if you can then use a hammer and chisel to get all the way around it so there are no remnants left

it may have been more nutrients in your system that allowed it to come out of dormancy or what not

good luck w/ this!

regards

Whatever it is I have the same exact thing in my tank? Have you noticed it closing up at night? Does it stay open at night or get bigger? Mine were ID as Manjano too but I don't think that's what they are? I'll post a picture in a sec......I'm glad I ran into this thread.

I agree mine look similar to a Manjano but since I have 0 in the tank since it's been setup I have no clue how this is possible. I've had my rock for YEARS and then this pops up? I actually have an entire colony of these things and am waiting for them to grow up so I can ID them. Look at the tips of the tentacles, same as yours. Here's two BAD pictures.

rynon-

did you ever have any Galaxia in your tank, or get rock/frags from someone who did?

Not sure if your asking me? I can hardly see the "whatever" to begin with so when they close up at night.....I see rock and that's it. They are really tiny, maybe the size of a pencil eraser? I'm setting up a new tank tomorrow and I'll put this rock in that tank.....new tank is going to be setup with existing LR, maybe I can get a better picture then? In the meantime I'll be looking to see if I can figure out what these things are. I also have a lot of "orange ball" anemones but these do not look the same. I personally feel it's an anemone of some sort, good or bad, time will tell. REALLY interested in any ideas on this.
