Just starting a seahorse tank

Hello, my son (who is 13) & I have been doing saltwater fish/coral in our 90 gal for sometime now and HE decided that WE try a seahorse tank.

So I went out and bought a 40gal tank, 40lbs Lr and 30lbs LS, Empiror 400 filter system & 36" Orbit twin 96 watts lighting system.

We are started our cycle on Saturday 2/18/06 and I did a 25gal water change from my 90 to his 40 to start the process even faster.

With al this said we read alot about seahorses and have spoken to a lot of people out there about the pro's & con's and would like to hear what everyone else has to say.

We found a web site called sea rider out of Hawaii and we say a pair of yellow sunburst seahorses that would nice in the tank.. any suggestions?

yeah- don't buy from ocean rider... but thats just me :D

ummm, there are many other CB sources for horses. seahorsesource is one. (its danu on the forums)

the yellow sunburts are erectus species, so that you know-and seahorses change thier color to go with thier environment. If you get the yellow sunburst, if they ARE yellow, they may not STAY yellow.

oh, and in a 40 gallon, go for two pairs: two males, two females if ya want babies, all males or all females if you don't. in that tank, you can keep just about any type of horse that is readily availble: erectus, kuda, and reidi.

I'll agree with Swanwillow - DanU' and his horses are great and he's in Florida too.. maybe you could avoid shipping them.

We want to thank you for your advice and in a few more weeks we will take your advice and shop around to the other seahorse site you recommended and look at what they have to offer.

We are excited about this new venture with seahorses and is a great father son project, since Tyler (13) has helped me start our 90gal fish/coral tank and knows almost as much as I do when it comes to coral & fish.

We are now both learning about what excites him which is seahorses and we have been reading books and printing different areticles from various sites.

i just recieved the 4 mustangs from oceanrider and they are fab..i would order from them again if i had to.. i got 4 mated pairs of mustangs, some shrimp and vibrance 2 for 395.00 ..thats not a bad deal...ive looked around and this is i think a great deal..

I don't mean to upset or hurt anyone's feelings but just throwing out a statement of "don't buy from a certain business" is not really fair.

There have been some people unhappy with OR but many more who are pleased with them and the stock they have bought from them.

I bought horses from them in the past and have never had problems. Some of these horses are now just over 6 years old and still doing well.

I don't know of any business that can claim to be perfect. There will always be some unhappy customers, no matter what.

Hi Blue Oasis. I'm assuming you live in PALM Harbor which would be my neck of the woods. I haven't been to all the fish stores in the area, but I do know that Pet-Mart on Busch Blvd does have some seahorses. So does "Fish and Other Ichthy Things" which is in Oldsmar. The second place is where I get most of my fish from and are very knowledgable. Good luck.

the problem with most LFS when it comes to seahorses are that they are either wild caught (erectus would be REAL cheap in florida!!!) or shipped in from sri lanka or vietnam... which people are thinking are raised in nets in the ocean, which have the same diseases as thier wild caught counterparts...

otherwise, yeah: you CAN get seahorses other places, its just that chances are they aren't very healthy, and your going to end up spending more trying to fix them than buying healthy tank bred specimins from known breeders.

Holmie_D_Klown, we have a 90gal fish / coral tank for somet time now and have been to the following stores in our area:

Fish and Other Ichthy Things" which is in Oldsmar.
Exotic Aquaticis in Dunedin
Marine Warehouse on on Hillsborough Ave and
Finz on Dale Mabry (AKA Creative Ocean)

If you are every interested in meeting and seeing our tanks or going to the various stores let us know.

I just revieved a pair of OR sunbursts and Mustangs. They are BEAUTIFUL!! One of the sunbursts is pink and the other is lighter peach. All 4 horses were very active when I opened the shipping styro. They all have nice guts on them as well. I have had them since sat. and all seem well.
