took my first trip to the fish store looking at saltwater fish and accessories and now i have some questions.....i'm starting with FOWLR but will eventually switch over to doing some frags and stuff

i'm either going to be setting up a 50 or 55g....

1. i'm going to setup 3 aquaclear 70 powerheads one in each back corner and one in the middle of the back glass i was told that the more flow the better this will give me 1200gphs flow.

2. Now as for skimmer i haven't heard much about the HOB ones but i was looking at the Seaclone which could be used as HOB or insump. I also Looked a Prizm model that looked pretty good. I'm not planning on doing a refug or sump quiet yet. Could someone please guide me.

3. I journeyed over to see what kinds of salt to use and ran into a huge section and i was lost for ideas. They had Oceanic, Instant Ocean, Kent Marine, Reef, and Coral Life. I have no idea what the difference is seems like all salt to me could someone give me an idea.

4. Also i looked into some sand i was thinking of buying 40lbs of dead sand and then 10lbs of live sand to mix in with it. It will be live overtime from the LR so why not start with some.

so i need some answer and fast tax money is coming in :D

1. For a FOWLR that sounds pretty good, not sure though
2. Seaclone doesnt have that great of a reputation, Look at the Remora-C ( I think thats the name) Its a great HOB skimmer.
3.Mostly personal preference, Instant Ocean and Oceanic are pretty popular; for a fowlr I dont think it will matter too much
4.Sounds good.

Hope this helps

My 2 cents about skimmers. My tank has only been up for 4 months. I have a Remora Pro (HOB) with a prefilter box. And an overflow drain that goes below the tank. I like it, the only problem it is noisy. Hear a constant shhhh from it. If I turn it off, the entire tank is virtually silent. I am not yet done with my stand, but it should get completely enclosed which should cut down on the noise, I HOPE! If you can, put the skimmer in the sump. Otherwise I like the skimmer.

1. for water flow, a lot of people prefer SEIO, as it provide a more gentle and wider flow pattern then other PH's.

2. Another vote for Remora and prefilter box - and yes, there is the shhh-shhh--shhhh noise plus some background hum.

3. IO - most popular on this forum (check every single poll on this forum). No need to pay premium for reef salt mix as it's going to be FO, you are just throwing away those heavily dosed calcium anyway.

You can also add a canister filter and take out all the media except carbon to polish the water and provide more water flow.

I agree with dchao. I used a cascade canister with spray bar did excellent for water flow in my 55 plus you can add different media to polish water

Baltimore, eh? Can't beat That Pet Place/That Fish Place for prices, that's for sure. Especially on hardware. For quality livestock, though, try Exotic Aquatics, on Waltham Road, right off of Joppa:

Prices are a bit higher, but the quality of the fish and corals are much better, IMO. And, it's closer to you! :)

boo you guys, i dont beleive no one has given him a proper

I will also give a big vote to my aquac remora!

I go to both places also, get to see a nice variety of stuff that way. But I definately try and get my hardware at That Fish Place because of the prices and selection.
