Since it has started warming up I went down to Shinnecock Inlet to get some water for my water changes and noticed millions of tiny free swimming things in the water, about the size of pepper. I tries looking at one thru a magnifying glass and they almost look like fleas. Would be better if they were baby brine shrimp .
Can you tell me what they are???

Thanks
William

I'd say the clarity is really good however the water temp is a different story. My hands were raw from the cold water over the weekend . I wouldn't want to fall in , I'm sure ..LOL not without a wetsuit anyway...

William,

We're in the middle of the spring plankton bloom, so there are a lot of flea sized things in the bays and ocean right now. You may have seen copepods, but I'm guessing they were barnacle larvae because I've been seeing a lot of them in our incomming water lately. Below is a link to a page that has nice photos of developmental stages of barnacles. You probably saw the cypris stage. The large appendage comming out of the shell in that photo won't ususally be so prominent and it is often tucked completely into the shell.

The water is pretty clear, but it's still dry suit weather. I saw a lot of seals out off the Shinnecock jetty yesterday which tells me it's still way too cold for me to get in the water.

Take care,
Todd
