I got a juvenile clown from the LFS on Friday because he had unique markings but i didnt get another because i would like a designer clown. He is very small (1 inch, max). How long do i have to get a female clown larger than him before this juvenile male becomes a female (as he is the only clown in my tank)?

I would not wait too long. Depending on its actual age you may have a few weeks. But if it were me i would get a larger clown in there as soon as you can at least to start the bond early. Dont expect them to mate for a while tho. I'm no expert so maybe someone else has a better answer for you. Good luck.

normally it can takes months for them to choose a gender, if you put another clown with him, one will show more dominance and will pick its gender faster maybe. Also if you only want one clown, it will usually just become a female by itself after 1 month or two

If it was that easy and fast that a 1" clownfish male turns to female then everyone would have a breeding pair in months weeks. From my experience every clownfish born are immature males not yet ready to breed. When they hit 1.5-25" depending on environment they then can become fully mature male and be ready to breed. Any clownfish that is over 3" I am 99.9% sure its a female. Good luck

I've had 18 month old males fertilize eggs when the established male in a breeding pair died. Stuck him in and in a few weeks was doing his job, but never a female under 2 that would spawn.
