Kalkwasser Stirrer

I'm in the market for a Kalkwasser stirrer. I was looking at the Aquamedic 1000 unit but most places have it listed as "Out of Stock". I'm getting the feeling this is being discontinued. Is Kalkwasser supplementation not a good practice any more? Can someone reccommend a reasonable replacement? I actually tried out the unit from Avast Marine and had issues with it.

I have a Deltec Kalk Stirrer that I bought a couple of years ago and never used. I thought I was going to use it to supplement my calcium reactor but never did. Send me a PM if you are interested. I'll give you a good price.

look at avast marine...Get the unit you can build, their equipment is top notch and fun to build...check the Avast Forum, they have a Thanksgiving coupon code

If you check my original post I mentioned that I tried a unit from Avast. I had a unit they built for me and the unit kept overflowing. They couldn't figure out why so I sent it back. Looking for a different manufacturer.

The aquamedic better not be dc'd its the only product they sell that I'm a total fan of. Been running it non stop for years.

Aquamedic 1000 all the way!
Have one and works great.
Hope they won't discontinue!
I want another one for my future 125gal.

Limewater is a great way to go if demand for calcium and alk is not super high, but I prefer dosing from a settled reservoir than from a stirrer.

Randy are talking about mixing before hand then letting it run from there? I would think a stirrer would allow constant saturation of the kalk so additional mixing isnt needed when new water is added...

Why the preference?

I'm referring to mixing up a big batch (like a Brute trash can full or more) and then letting it settle and using it till it runs out without any stirring. I make up 132 gallons at a time and use it over an extended period (many weeks).

That allows all undesirable impurities to settle out (such as copper or phosphate), it allows better control over potency than many stirrers have (many do not result in saturated limewater, for example), and also allows you to use vinegar in it if you want.

So Randy if you make your water in a large container how do you get the water to the sump I take it you do not want to put a pump on the bottom of the container, do you put a bucket in and scoop it out? Sorry if I am derailing PS I found the AquaMedic at Aqua Cave and a couple of other place.

I make it in 3 brute trash cans plumbed together, and i pump it into my sump with a very slow pump on a float switch. I use a Reef filler, but there are many types of suitable diaphragm or peristaltic pumps around.

Great to have you here, Randy!!
I add 2 tea spoons of kalk every 2 or 3 days in my reactor since the beginning.
The precipitated powder on the bottom of the reactor never gets up to the 1/3 of the reactor's height.
My peristaltic pump doses about 200ml per night of fresh water from a reservoir.
That is more than enough, just to keep Ca++ and OH-in check and to boost my coralline.
No hard corals in the system.
Every month I clean the reactor and start all over again.

The way a look at the stirrer is that is serves to help the mixing of the new incoming fresh water to the already saturated clear solution. It runs very, very slow.

Please let me know more...
Is there any suggestions to improve the use of kalk in my case?
Thanks!

I use a deltec stirrer in addition to a 4 unit dosing pump. I still love the kalk stirrer and it helps keep the PH up. I am also still a fan of stirrers over pumps yet its all preference.

The guys at Avast were stumped too. But Justin was GREAT and had excellent customer service. It would just rise above the outlet and flood the floor for no reason.

If the stirrer is meeting the tank needs for alkalinity without dosing solids, then it is serving perfectly well, and I wouldn't mess with it. :)

So, did you keep the one from Avast?
That should be almost like the Aquamedic, right?
The Avast is a very good deal too!

No. I shipped the Avast unit back. I'm not sure that is just like the Aquamedic unit. I decided on a Deltec unit. I got a good deal on a used one.
