Kasey's Kube

Haha, sorry to be taking your ideas, Mike! :lmao:

I keep finding myself wanting to add a bunch of different Paly's, but I tell myself 'no'. I still like the idea of adding complimentary corals, but I want to make sure I don't go all 'Kid in a Candy Shop' with those, either.

It is all good. You will do a much better job at it than I could.

This way you do it, take care of it, worry about it, and I get to look at all the pretty pictures.

You crack me up, Mike! I don't know if that'll work out so well. :p I just hope I can grow this stuff out; I want to see what's in my mind to actually happen this time.

Well, I've got a busy day today. I have some goodies coming in the mail. If they arrive today as scheduled, I'll be working on the tank most of the day. To give a hint, it has nothing to do with the water, at least not directly.

Hopefully, I'll finish today and post pics.

Glad I can bring a smile to you and help you remember the important aspects of this hobby.

Thought you might like these and would be an interesting read for you. Beaun posted this in my thread:

Paul Whitby has been doing talks for reef clubs about aquascaping and the golden ratio is part of that. He did his talk/lecture at NERAC last year;

Thanks Perry! So far, the coral looks better each day in terms of color and polyp extension. The corallites are a light yellow/green, while the polyps are starting to take on a richer green. I'm anxious to see how this one will turn out. I just hope to be able to keep it happy and healthy. For that reason, I'll be testing the big 3 parameters tomorrow.

Thanks for the link, Mike. At this point, the paragraphs about coral really have my interested peaked. Placement of the corals will be essential to making this a beautiful reef; I don't want to mess it up.

As mentioned in my earlier post, I've been working for a good part of the day on a tank project. I've swapped out my heatsinks and led's for one large heatsink and more led's. I kept the original led's: 3 Neutral White, 3 Cool White, 4 Blue, 8 Royal Blue. But, now I've included the additional led's: 2 Osram Hyper Red, 2 Rebel Cyan, 2 Green, and 4 Ultra Violet. Now, there's a total of 28 led's in the fixture. As you'll see in the pics, I still need optic lenses for the Cyan's and Red's.

Personal Review:
After keeping some corals under the blue and white configuration I originally had, I felt like I was missing out on the pinks and reds in some of my corals. If a coral was supposed to be pink, purple, or 'red', they appeared washed out. Because of this, I added the hyper reds and ultra violets. I also added the cyans (green/blue, more on the green side) and greens to further the diversity in the light.

The results are pretty pleasing. The color looks more natural, but it still accents colors very well. My only complaint is that without lenses on the cyans reds, I get those two colors spilling out of the tank. Lenses coming soon. :) Let me know what you think!

I like the new light color, much more crisp and life like. I bet the real color of the corals will stand out as opposed to the washed or tinted look.

Update:

Coral:
Well, it's been over a week, and the Millepora has been great. The PE keeps getting better; it's nice and shaggy. Also, the color hasn't diminished, despite still residing on the sandbed. I have not increased the intensity of the LED's; next week I'll be moving this piece to the rocks, while 3 new additions will take residence on the sandbed.

Chemistry:
Magnesium has been stable, while Alkalinity and Calcium are starting to drop. In answer to this, I've added Kalkwasser to my top-off containers. Using a float valve, the solution consistently drips into the sump.

Algae continues to be virtually non-existent. I scrape the walls once week. By that time, the algae looks like sporadic smudge marks. I was concerned as to whether or not the light was intense enough, but since the corals seem happy, I doubt that's an issue. Still haven't tested nitrates or phosphates.

New Arrivals:
Next week I'm receiving 3 corals from Copps. Despite my strict list for livestock, I couldn't pass these pieces up. They'll act as replacements for the Blue Soli, Purple Stylo, and Pink Seria. While I won't have the texture of the Stylo and Seria in the tank, I will still have a tabling growth present. Last SPS coral to buy is Orange Digitata.

Thanks Perry! I'm just glad to be taking things nice and easy. I'm finding this hobby to be much more fun than it used to be for me. :)

Really looking forward to seeing those coral when you are ready to show them. Where do you typically get them from?

Hey Steve! The three corals I'm getting this coming week are from John Coppolino; he goes by the username Copps. Once he ships them and they arrive, I'll definitely be showing some pics. :D

As far as where I usually get frags, I used to go to LFS's in Va. Beach, but here in Greenville, it's kind of a reef keeping desert. I've shopped on Live Aquaria, Vivid Aquariums, Blue Zoo, and Dr. Mac's. All of them seem pretty nice, but I feel like I have to hunt to find what I'm looking for. Also, they usually want more than what I think they're really worth. With this tank, I wanted to start with bigger frags of things that I really wanted. John has so many corals that I've always wanted, so I PM'ed him about buying some big frags/mini colonies. He was very accommodating. Hope you enjoy the future pics. I might try posting some GIF files.
