Kasey's Kube

Tank looks superb. I like the whole sleek look. PLEASE keep this tank running long term. It will looks awesome (and I predict an easy NTOTM) once corals are grown up. Keep up the good work my friend! :)

Thank you very much for your kind words, Sahin! :) I will do my best!

Hey how is your diy skimmer working?

Amazingly well! It churns out some poop; I honestly didn't expect it to work half this well. I figured it would be a fun way to have something that help assist me with waste removal, and I would take care of the rest with WC's. I still do 20% weekly water changes, but it's probably overkill. :)

Would love to see photos of the skimmer in action. Unless of course you are intending to patent the design :celeb1:

Patent the design? Ha! Of all the DIY projects I've undertaken for this system, I think the skimmer build is the sloppiest. :p

I'll be back in town late tomorrow evening; I'll do my best to snap some pics then.

I'm sorry it took so long to take a pic, Sahin. But, here's a shot of the skimmer in action:

I've owned some nice skimmers, including a Euro-Reef RS-135 (on my 65g) and a Bubble King Mini 180 (on my 100g), in the past. While this skimmer's looks do not compare to the other previous two (especially the BK), it performs extremely well! I'm quite satisfied. I just emptied the cup today; it only took 2 days to fill it up completely. I do skim wet, but I was still extremely surprised. The skimmate was a strong tea color with bits of food and algae; the smell was wicked!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! :)

Future plans include upgrading to a custom 5g sump and ATO setup. Right now, the 2.5g will have to do, but I have to stay on top of the evap. :p

Thanks for posting the photo. It looks to be working very well.

Considering you used DIY rocks you should have very little phosphates and consequently, your corals should colour up very fast.

Thanks, Tony!

No, I thoroughly rinsed the crushed coral in RO/DI water before adding it to the system. It stays put, even when the MP20 hits its high peaks. I'm very pleased with this. Substrate was essential to pull off the look I wanted to achieve, but with high flow, sand is a difficult thing to have in a nano. I feel like the crushed coral is the best of both worlds. :)

Looking good Kasey. Are you manually dosing 2 part on this tank?

Currently, I'm dosing a carbonate supplement to maintain alkalinity, but I'm not dosing Mg or Ca+. Through the weekly water changes, they stay around 475 ppm and 1450 ppm, respectively. Once the corals start to take off and mature in the system, I'm sure I'll have to set up a more thorought dosing system.

Things are starting to grow, but it's a little slow. :p

absolutely fantastic aquascaping concept... love it! well done... gonna be awesome when it fill in a bit

That makes sense - I think this tank is going to grow in great!

Thanks, Neal! I'm hoping so. Now, if I could just get those darn corals to grow faster! :hammer: :D

My tree looks like it's in the winter season. :p

Thank you! :)

Well, this dino war is getting pretty crazy. I don't know how things will turn out, but even if I have to start from the beginning, I'm still going forward with this tank. I won't give up. :) Wish me luck; this is a troubling time for me and tank.

Hey kasey, jack sent me the links to your tanks. This latest one looks sick I cant wait to see it grow in. Hope your well man.

Thanks man! I'm hoping everything goes well with it. The dino's are kicking my butt, but it will start pulling through soon.

Right now, I'm designing a larger sump with an ATO. This 2.5g is just too small. :p The evaporation is killing me with these 12 hour shifts. I come home to find it sucking air sometimes. Yet, if I top it off any more, it'll flood if the power's out.
