How many is a good number to keep together?
I read that a large group they dont get along,
I'm thinking 5-7, will that be an ok number?

There are cardinals that can be kept in groups, but I don't think Kaudern's (aka Banggais) are among them.

A group will eventually winnow itself down to two (if you're lucky and have a pair) or just one. There are people around here who can tell you how to tell the difference between males and females if you want to just try to make a pair.

Correct. Often times if you are buying from a LFS, first be SURE these are tank raised, second look for two hanging out together.

I'll have to ask next time I drop by my LFS,
Other than 2 chilling together how do you tell the diff between male and female?

I tried keeping 12 babies that I reared together in a 75 gallon tank. They made it peacefully together for 6 months then the aggression really started happening.

Sexing them is difficult but, in general, the males will have bigger and deeper jaws and often the second dorsal fin is much longer.
