KCFITZ78's 65 Gallon Hexagon Build / Reef Start-Up

Hey, how is your Hexagon tank going? I am still new to reef central, so I haven’t figured out how to search for a specific persons’ most recent thread. However, I just got done with your “reef start-up” thread and took a lot of notes. I am thinking about switching my current fowlr 37 gallon to a 35gallon hex and adding a few corals, but I've read a lot of mixed views, on the Hex style tank. So if you don't mind me asking, how has it been for you so far??
Thanks
Jay

I have had no issues running a Hexagon tank. This is my first saltwater tank and I check my chemistry weekly and I do water changes weekly. I believe those are the 2 keys to a healthy tank.

Personally I like the look of my 65 gallon Hexagon Tank as it sits in the corner of the room. I find the shape to be unique and it complements for 45 gallon rectangular fresh water tank nicely.

Keep in mind your 35 Hex has a smaller footprint than my 65 Hex

You have to keep in mind there are 4 challenges with a hexagon tank....

1. It was a bit of a challenge to get the rock formations built tall and solid.
2. It is a long reach to the bottom of the tank for any maintenance you may need to do, and is a pain catching fish.
3. Lighting will be an issue as most lights can't reach well into deep tanks. I have yet to find anyone that has solved this issue.
4. Sump space in tank cabinet.

I will try and update my thread as to how my tank is today and with some pics

Looks awesome. I only had a 40hex that was planted fresh but I found arranging rockwork easier than my 60 salt rectangle (I thought making/displaying shelves so much easier/cooler in hex tank), I will say that the biggest frustration I had with hex was doing slight work and having the sleeve of my t-shirt dip in the water.....then again that happened with my rectangle tank too.
