Keeping a single Banggai Cardinal

I have a 28 gallon that I am planning my fish list for. I really like the banggai cardinal, but I have read that they do better in pairs. With it being such a small tank, if I have 2 of the cardinals, it doesnt leave much room for other fish. I would like to just have 1 cardinal, but if it isnt going to go well without another partner, I wouldnt get it. So my question is how important is it that the cardinals be kept in pairs, or will it do just fine if I just get one. Thanks.

Try to get a captive bred one, as ones from the wild are dwindling and they are/almost an endangered species. It'll do fine just as one, as if they'd be the same sex they could start fighting anyhow.

I've had a single Bangaii for ~18 months and hes doing fine. Than can be bullied easily so need to be kept with calm tankmates.

like SteveJakubiec said, get a captive bred one. i bought one over a year ago as a little baby and he is doing fine by himself. he is a huge eater. the only problem is, i cant keep very small shrimp in the tank with him. he picks at them and eventually eats them. a decent sized cleaner shrimp he wont bother.

Keeping 2 banggai as opposed to one will have minimal effect on your bioload.
