Keeping multiple angels

I have a question about how I should go about adding multiple angels to the same tank (FOWLR). This build is one I have planned for almost a year from now and I've seen some amazing tanks with multiple angels in them. I am seriously looking at a 180g W (six foot) or a 220g for added room. Some angels that I have my heart set on keeping are an Imperator and a Regal, possibly also a Scribbled Angel... this is based solely on looks and I have NOT done nearly enough research so don't bash me quite yet. I currently have a Flame angel who is doing well and unless something goes wrong will be traveling into the new tank once built. Other possible tank mates would be a couple of tangs (3-4, yellow, purple, hippo) and a clown trigger if i decide it isn't going to be too aggressive(Would go in dead last). That should round out any of the larger fish in the tank. Writing all this down makes it sound like a lot more than when it was in my head. If it is too much give me an idea about how much bigger of a tank I would need, I really am not good at estimating these things. Lets start with this and see how much I get flamed.

I completely ran away after my original question, but I just need to know if the group of angels (Imperator, Regal, Scribbled and Flame) would be ok tank mates. They are all from different Genus' which seems to be best from what I read, the flame I estimate will be 3-4 inches and I want the Imperator to be in the starting stages of changing to his adult coloration (I know, very picky).

Do I need to add them all at once or would changing up the rock work suffice when adding a new angel. Total that would make 4 and I am thinking I will need a bigger tank...

You will definitely need a bigger tank. Specially if you want to add all those tangs and a clown trigger. Almost all the fish you want grow to a great big size!
Regal 9"
Imperator 15"
Scribbled 9"
Flame 4"
Yellow tang 7.9"
Purple tang 9.8"
Blue hippo 12"
Clown trigger 19"

I'd leave out the clown trigger...even if you add it in last it will become boistrous over time, which is the last thing you'll want with some prized angels. Like Spooky208 said though...it will require another upgarde down the road. If purchased at appropriate sizes you could get a couple/few years out of the 180, but I'd start at least with the 220.

I'd reduce the tang list, probably just one. Angels will be great at cleaning up the rocks for you too, and adding more tangs will eliminate most of the natural food source that the angels could graze on. Also just another aggression issue to address when it could be avoided.

I know someone who keeps all the angels you want + more in a 270 gal.....they're looking to upgrade now after having it set up 2.5 years.

HTH and GL!

ok, so the tank will probably be too small. Since I know length is probably more important than actual gallons, how long should I shoot for and I can start there... 7ft? 8ft? longer?

The clown trigger was more of an afterthought, it is probably my favorite fish but I have heard numerous complaints about it's attitude problems. I would probably have to get rid of it at the 10"-12" mark, I doubt it would be happy in any tank I could afford at it's full length.

I found the dimensions for a 8ft I think I could handle... its a 240 Long.
96"x24"x25"

I have done what you are proposing in a 350g FOWLR tank. The scribbled will be more sensitive than the others (from my experience) so that should be added first and allowed to form a territory. I also had a clarion which is one very tough fish.

The clown trigger is a great fish but in a single species tank.

matt, I'd suggest atleast 8ft of length and more then 2ft wide. Foot print is everything. I really don't think height becomes to much of a concern, more of a nuisance trying to clean the tank. A clown trigger will eventually own that tank, atleast the scribbled and regal who aren't really all the aggressie. A large emperor though could handle a smaller clown. My ideal size for a FO aggressive tank would be 96"x36"x30" 450g or 96"x48"x24" 480g.

Yeah so I have read a lot about the clown triggers, probably since it was the fish which got me into saltwater in the first place if there was such a fish. My LFS has a 700g aggressive tank display and I am sure he would trade me for a smaller clown trigger once mine gets too big/aggressive. I don't plan on letting it grow past a foot in the 240 and I don't know if I can go much larger on the tank, may have to break down my list just a smidgen.

On a side note, I really dislike tall tanks. Guess I may just be lazy but anything taller than 30" just sounds like a pain to clean. I doubt i will go past 26"

Matt, as mentioned earlier, height has little to nothing to do with "fish elbow room." It all has to do with the footprint. Most fish will do just as well in a 12" tall tank as they would in a 36" tall tank. I definently say go with the biggest footprint you can for the beauties your talking about. ccambell57 is a very knowledgable reefer here on RC who has a FOWLR with VERY nice angels. He had a clown trigger with them for a long time, up until recently when he purchased a Bandit angel....he would be a great source to talk to about this.
