I got an AP700 from Dr Foster and Smith on that 25% off sale... man, a no brainer at that price!

Pretty excited about it for my new build. It's going over a RSR XL 425.



Wow! Way to go! F&S does do a great job on sales. Much better than any other online, also if you sign up for their mailer there are coupons that give better deals as well. I would suggest everyone considering getting the mailer.

In my case I ordered from BRS, paid full MSRP, but I got significant reward points for the purchase. I would assume in that case the warranty would apply. Not sure how F&S receipt would appear but it's possible depending on how it was done that a loop hole like that could help keep the warranty.

That is illegal. These places are all authorized dealers of the product which are determined by the manufacturer themselves. MSRP means manufacturer suggested retail price with keyword being "suggested". If the manufacturer doesn't like a retailer discounting their stuff then they are free to stop giving them product. If someone buys a product from a retailer that is authorized by the manufacturer at the time they have no choice but to honor the warranty.

Even trying to pull some shenanigans like that would be the easiest lawsuit there is.

Now there is such a thing as MAP which is minimum advertised price but that is an agreement between the supplier and retailer. If a retailer discounts the item below the MAP while being an authorized dealer the supplier can go for breach of contract but that has nothing to do with the consumer.

I have heard of ecotech pulling distribution from stores that sell their product for selling lower than their MAP but that's between them and the retailer.

AP700 to T5 colour synchronization

AP700 to T5 colour synchronization

Would anyone that came from using T5's know which setting of blue on an AP700 would be similar to the a colour from an ATI B+ & C+ T5 bulb? I am using AP700's along with B+ & C+ T5's to help with shadowing and if possible I would like to have both the AP700 and T5 set to the same colour.

AP700 Firmware V2.2
Beta and Mac Updater Beta Available Now

Since the release of the phone apps, we have been working extremely hard on a big update to the AP700 firmware to add new features and improve stability. Now the new Beta app and firmware v2.2 are available for both Windows PCs and Macs (new)!


New features:
Improved programming to increase stability and accuracy.
Added "Auto Refresh" feature - Once locked, light will refresh itself to the current program even after touching the manual buttons (with exception of the Power button).
Added "Default Demo Program" - Light will cycle through all demo effects. Pressing the program button for the first time will trigger this demo mode.
Added factory reset function - Unwanted programs can now be completely cleared.
Power outage recovery has been improved. Light will now save program status every 5 minutes (once an hour previously).
Misc. bugs fixed

Coming soon:
Improved lunar cycle - to mimic a more natural cycle
Cloud backup and restore of programs and data
Tablet apps major update (UI/UX update to match phone versions and new features)

It's a brand new product from an authorized dealer. They try to pull that on me and they can deal with the BBB and Amex.

It won't happen though, that's not what they do. The reason you see that from Ecotech is because not paying full price for their products means that you bought it gray market ie not from an authorized source. Their authorized dealers are not allowed to discount their prices.

Would 2 AP700's work over a 210? 72x24x30. The 30 depth is what concerns me. That and I have two braces, not one. Am hoping I could position the Kessil's to straddle each brace.

I've considered MH/T5 but worry about long term cost and even more about long term bulb availability for MH. I have a A360w over my 60 cube and other than shading it's been great.

My foot print over my 180 is similar to yours. The depth isn't that much of a problem. Yes two would do well! I set my lights to only 70% and hit the sweet spot nearly from the sand bed up. I'm sure that the AP700s would punch to 30" as long as your realistic and not mounting all your SPS to the bare bottom, even then who knows might even work. Never been tested at 100% that depth. These lights have really good punch, I think you would be very happy with two AP700s.

Thoughts on the braces? At what height do the two lights on the fixture intersect? That would give me an idea of how high I can mount it and still straddle the brace.

Did the calculations and the MH/T5 fixture I was looking at would cost ~$750/year more in bulb and electrical costs. If there's a really good Black Friday deal I may just pick up 3.

Three would be super! Either way I don't see braces being too problematic. You can mount the light a little lower if you think it is. But the two picks will straddle it well.

Thanks for the feed back. 3 would be iffy on the budget. Prob start with 2 and, if I feel I need more, add a 3rd later.

Hmm, think I might have over bought. I am planning on using 5 x AP700 and 8 x 80W T5 on my new build. The tank is fairly long though (120" x 36" x 30" no cross bracing, euro braced).

My plan is to have each AP700 cover a 24" x 36" section by mounting them perpendicular to the length of the tank. Just for good measure, I am planning on 2 rows of T5 down the centre, under the AP700s, between the 2 AP700 LED clusters. Then a row of T5 on each end of the AP700s.

Ecotech can't force anyone legally to sell their product at a set price because that's called price fixing and it's illegal. The way manufacturers get around this is by creating MAP agreements and putting the "authorized dealer" stamp on a contract.

Yes, discounting violates the agreement... That's the definition of not being allowed to do something. You're not disagreeing with me.

Also what you described is *not* price fixing. Price fixing is when competitors agree to sell their products at certain prices to control the market. Totally different thing that's not applicable here.

You said that ecotech forbids retailers from discounting and that is not true. They can discount to their hearts content the only thing is dealing with the possible repercussions of it. I say possible because most manufacturers could care less if a retailer is violating MAP. They might act like they do but in the end if a retailer is doing it on the down low they won't lift a finger as they are selling units.
