Kessil AP 700 Owners Gather Here!

No one has had connection issues, I agree, user error.

You best read back in this thread. I had many wifi connection issues to 3 different routers and it wasn't until I tried a 4th that I could get it to connect.

I think you should go back and read my post again. I mentioned that connecting through routers had problems. However those problems are not the fixture nor Kessil. Connecting through a router like that on ANY device requires you to open or forward the correct ports. If the router has a firewall it can be more complicated. I had problems doing port forwarding on my router for my PS4 so I could host games with an open NAT connection.

I'll say it again, the AP700 has no connection problems. Connecting to the light through a router can be a problem. That problem is not in Kessil control.

That wasn't a problem with the light, that was a problem with not understanding some aspect of your home network. Your other routers were probably blocking the ports needed or something along those lines. If it was a problem with the light, it wouldn't have started working with a new router.

Ok maybe I'm just being ignorant but do I need to delete the beta app then reinstall? When I click the link it opens and says unavailable to download

If I'm not wrong, just download from App Store

You might have to delete the current app.

Here is the reply I received in June of 2016 when that happened to me.

"Thank you for your email. Please try to re-download the app from the app store if you have not done so. Please let us know if you have any questions. "

That is not how wifi works at all. The ap700 has 2 modes when trying to setup via wifi, adhoc and infrastructure mode. Before the new app infrastructure mode was absolutely useless. The light could not connect to an ssid and negotiate an ip with the router. This has nothing to do with open ports. Port mapping occurs after a device has authenticated to the network and actually has an IP address to be part of the network. Also pretty much every consumer router out there will never have a deny all rule for devices contained within the same subnet. The phone connection with the light is purely internal network based and port mapping only needs to be done when you need traffic to pass through the wan which the ap700 does not do.

Even with the new beta app the infrastructure mode is hit and miss. I use enterprise grade network equipment in my house and the ap700 still had issues connecting to my unifi ap-ac pro.

So if the lfs didn't have the beta app which I doubt they did it was definitely not user error when the light was not connecting to their router. I like the light but kessils app connectivity is just atrocious.

If you have a wifi device that will not do an ssid handshake with all the common consumer routers out there and only a select few then it's a crappy device.

Well seeing as I know the correspondence I have had with Kessil, I standby my statement.

No idea why you are explaining all of that to me, I could write you a dissertation on the subject. You are talking about something different than what I was referring to. You are talking about establishing the original connection, I was talking about connecting to the light after it had already been set up. You're also referring to old firmware. That problem was resolved a while ago.

Exactly, there is a difference from establishing a connections than doing work over that connection. Just because you can connect doesn't necessarily mean that you have two way communication with each device over the net.

So then why are you taking about port mapping? The light requires no port mapping at all to connect to anything. The application is not cloud based like ecosmart live with a reeflink and others.

Even if user got to setup the light in infrastructure mode the connection is still inconsistent. The light will connect to the router just fine one day and then next day if one launched the phone app to check settings it would not work.

The only mode that works without issue is ad-hoc.

Much for the same reasons my APEX WiFi adapter is inconsistently connected but my phone connects just fine.

I didn't say anything about port forwarding on the WAN interface. I just said the router may have been blocking ports as a vague example of what could have been occurring. The point wasn't to try to troubleshoot a specific problem, it was to convey that an issue with one's home network is not a problem with the light.

APEX wifi will take a dump at times if you have the hybrid AES/TKIP setting enabled for your WPA2 radio. Something most with problems overlook.
