Kessil AP700

Perhaps I should look at the Radion â„¢ XR30w Pro lIghts - would 3 be enough?

63" x 36"H x 29.5"D

if your tank height is 24 not 36, i would suggest u get 2 ap700 and 3 radion. and your tank is 29.5deep, you can add T5 at the front for better coverage.

BUT your tank is 36H, I guess you need double budget, and u need extra led fixture at the front.

I would check out the bulk reef supply lighting video on YouTube where they show par from most of the different led fixtures out. I consider it more unbiased since they don't have a dog in the hunt like AI does in that LED comparison tool.

The more and more I look into this the more I am understanding that the AP700 will be totally perfect for my tank. At around 24"-30" I will have somewhere around 200 - 125 par which is ideal to keep some SPS and LPS/Mushrooms/Sponges (considering you can grow LPS in 50 PAR - I am looking to have a well balanced tank vs all SPS which I personally feel looks a little unnatural. I have seen the BRS video and have been talking to Ryan about it. I think we are over analyzing the lighting a bit to much. Once you get into any of these new higher end LED lights we are splitting hairs between them. If we have over 200 PAR in the bottom of a 36" tank that would be problematic in the 12-18" range where you would have readings triple that. Just my thoughts. Any comments?

Ap700 light sync up with second light issues

Anyone having issues running a program and having one light do something different even though they are both running the same program?

Looking for the fix.

Yes. There are several software issues that are still outstanding. Hopefully the majority of known issues will be addressed when a new firmware update is released.

Issues I know about / have run into

1) Programs hold their settings for weather and other effects even if you have changed them or removed them. Added a thunderstorm to the program your running and didn't like it. Well its going to keep happening until you make a new program in a blank slot or wipe the app.

2) Same holds true for start and end time and color changes though a bit more sporadically. Eg if you had your program turn the lights on at 10am and then changed that to 11am about 1 of 7 days the lights are going to start at 10am.

Work around for these issues is the same - Every time you make a significant change which requires the removal of, a set point or event, create a new program from a blank slot in the app. Do not save that program till it is exactly how you want it.

3) There is a lag between grouped fixtures. While I haven't done enough to prove this fully, it seems that if the lights are in the same group one acts as master to the other and there is always a delay/lag in the secondary fixture when running the program.

Work around run the fixtures in different groups running the same program. It seems that then each one gets a copy of the program and executes it based on their internal clock.

4) Internal clock sucks. The internal clocks on these fixtures sucks and begins to drift very quickly. Currently my lights are about 5 seconds out of sync running the exact same program. This gets worse the longer they run.

Work around connect to the lights with your iPad this resets the internal clocks and they are fine. The 5 second difference that I have now takes about a week and thats about where it bugs me and I log in with my iPad and mitigate the issue. I let is run for a month once and the fixtures ended up about an hour off.

Now with all that said and the apps general clunkiness the light quality from these fixtures is fantastic. I love the shimmer effect and have never even seen a hint of color separation or banding I see with other leds. Also customer service has been fantastic and they do seem to be trying to resolve the issues with the software, but there do seem to be growing pains as they make the jump to really controllable fixtures.

Thanks for the info, sounds like I am going to have more issues to get annoyed with. We all need to continuously email Kessil so they are aware. I have sent a couple emails to them and have had zero response. First one was about a month ago. Luckily for me the tank isn't up and running yet. Did they give an update for when the new software was due to come out?

Kessil was supposedly testing this light for over a year before release.

I wonder what the heck they were testing with all of these problems left...

Glad I didn't spend $900 on this product!!! Bottom of the barrel E Machines have better clock chips if that says anything!

It's in invite-only beta testing right now. 6 months post release, and still no phone apps for general use.

Beta Testing Works!!

Beta Testing Works!!

Well I took the advice, sent in my info and 24 hours later I got the invite to beta test the app. It works very well, so much better than the iPad mini, the main thing is both lights work together exactly. I thought for a second there I was going to have to send one of the lights back as I was running the exact same program for both lights but they were doing different things. It also appears that the moonlight is even dimmer (previously people were saying that the moon light was way too bright), the storm and cloud modes work. I haven't tested a cycle yet but I will once I set up a program (as some of you may know I am still in set up mode of my 300 gallon tank my other post about "My 300 Gallon tank") I will know a bit more after I run a 24 hour period, the main thing is I don't have to buy another iPad. I have an ipad2 and my wife has an iPad mini newest model but you know wives and their stuff - "what yours is mine and what's mine is, well, mine too"

I hope this app gets fully implemented, I will be putting in as much feedback as possible, so awesome to be able to run it from your phone. Just go to Kessils Facebook page and go to the link about beta testing. Very happy so far. Will see how it goes.

Now, what I will criticize is this, why do they only allow 10 program points, should allow at least one an hour of day light personally I think 14-18 would be ideal. I like the idea of having what appears to be a bit of a reddish early morning sun rise in the water then turning sky blue then into the darker blues to violets in and why can't we program the entire 24 cycle with a weekly schedule that way you could have a storm or two a week vs same everyday. I would like a night storm once in a while that would be cool. When it's in lunar mode you can't do anything. Kinda odd. Or a random cloud/storm mode that they just automatically pop up just like in real life. I think the rainbow and aura modes are useless (who or why would anyone even use that completely unnatural mode - just my opinion) I'm guessing it's only going to get better. Cheers happy reefing!

Both are great lights and great companies. What are you planning on growing?

Check out this LED comparison tool - https://www.saltwateraquarium.com/news/ais-led-par-comparison-tool/

If these are correct and measured as a single Hydra 52 HD vs A Kessil fixture, then two Hydra 52's should crush the AP700 in a few areas.

I just saw this and I wondered why it's wayyy off from my tests and I realized it's from AI.

The PAR numbers I get are more in line with what BRS saw in their tests. https://youtu.be/V7XLgLiA0PM?t=1285

AP700 magnetic lens shown at RAP. 2 different diffusions, works to soften the point source and reduces shadowing.

Programming issues

Still seems the AP700 doesn't want to follow the program I put in through the iPhone app. I have also emailed Kessil and they haven't responded, been over a week. What am I going to do with $2000 in lights that don't work. Any help? Very Frustrated. I am hoping I have done something wrong and someone on here can help out. Cheers.

I assume you have both lights in the same group?

Are you connecting directly to the lights?

Have you created a new separate program from the included ones?

Try resetting and reconnecting each light. I've never had any problems. Hope you get it worked out.

When you add the lights to the app they don't default to a group. You have to put them in one. Once they are in a group they will sync with each other.

K. Just to clarify. The lights are in the group, all connected, no worries there. I connect directly to the lights. I can do everything to them, storms, clouds, etc. There is a slight delay from one light to the other but other than that it's fine. The problem is once I have selected my program that I made the lights turn on to the time of day that it is at and never change.
