For this spring break im gonna be down in Key West for a week and probably will dive 2-3 times while down there. Im wondering what's the best way to take pictures while diving, getting good quality pictures without having to spend a ton of money.

I have a Canon Powershot G10, and ive looked at the underwater housing which is not very cheap.

Thanks,
Chris

Underwater housing may be the only way to go unless you can find a cheap underwater camera, but you might not want a cheap underwater camera if you want high quality pictures as you say. I have never used a cheap underwater camera so I can't tell you if the quality is good or not.

you can also get a special plastic bag that fits most non dslrs. It is water tight and good to about 30 feet. Around $10. I used one snorkeling and no problem with leaking.

thanks for the input,
im looking into the underwater housing right now.

Griffith are you talking about a drybag? like one that you use for keeping things dry for diving?

i dive with a G10 in the canon housing. I have taken some great shots with it. The Canon housing is the least expensive solution at around $180.00. good luck and enjoy Key West, be sure to dive the Vandenburg its a great dive.

nope, it it a clear thick plastic bag with a rubber cone to put your lens. It has a velcro flap that double folds and remains water tight. I used one for a point and shoot and it cost me around $20. Its good to about 30 feet. I bought it at this store www.vistek.ca (in Toronto) I did a quick check on the site and couldn't find it- they have a toll free number, give them a call.

There are a bunch of similar ones on ebay, but I've never used them. I always use the hard case made for my camera.

Unfortunately I haven't shelled out the money for a housing yet, so I've only used cheap underwater cameras. The quality of the pictures with those is highly dependant on visibility/clarity and light. When we dove in the Keys the visibility was absolute crap and it was a dark day out, so our pictures were horrible, but when we were in Nassau we had insane visibility and it was a very bright day, so our pictures were pretty decent (see below for the results after some Photoshop tweaking, although they're still a bit on the grainy side). That being said, if you have the option and you want high quality pictures, I'd avoid chancing it and definitly look into renting a camera for your trip (I know I'm buying a housing before I book my next dive).
